Description:

Job Purpose:
The Lancet Regional Health - Western Pacific at Elsevier is looking for a full-time, in-house Senior Editor to join the editorial team from our Sydney head office. Working alongside the Editor-in-Chief you will be responsible for assisting in the development of this new online-only gold open access title as part of The Lancet’s global initiative for regional health.
This role would be suitable for someone who has recently finished their PhD/MD training and is looking for a change in career, from academia to publishing.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee submissions, quality peer review and publication of the most relevant and practice-changing research in the Western Pacific region.
  • Establish key working relationships with members of the medical profession, the media, and other editors.
  • In order to promote the journal, identify key content and keep up to date with current developments across all specialties, attendance at conferences, relevant meetings and laboratory and institute visits will form a key component of this position.
  • Sub-editing material from all sections of the journal to improve clarity of expression, and to conform to journal style.
  • Suggesting and helping to develop new initiatives for the further development of the journal.
  • Other duties as may be necessary from time to time (e.g. covering for other team members during holiday and sickness absences).

Requirements:

  • PhD or MD in a directly relevant discipline is a prerequisite. Some editorial experience is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of biological and medical sciences (essential)
  • Solid writing/editing skills and a high attention to detail.
  • Sound communication, relationship management and negotiations skills
  • Ability to work autonomously or within a team.
  • Sound organisational, problem-solving skills and the ability to work to deadlines.
  • Solid MS office skills and the ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Ability to work in a team and to keep strict deadlines
  • Negotiation skills with members of the medical profession, the media, and other editors
