Fortescue is seeking a Senior Engineer - Hydrogen Production to join the exciting and energetic Fortescue Hydrogen Systems (FHS) team in Gladstone, Queensland.
FHS is leading Fortescue’s development a portfolio of hydrogen products centred on the production of renewable hydrogen. FHS is underpinned by Fortescue’s world class expertise, operational excellence, and proven capability to drive future growth.
FHS has made the Final Investment Decision to build PEM50, a 50MW green hydrogen facility in Gladstone, Queensland, utilising Fortescue’s own electrolyser technology. PEM50 is both a standalone plant, and a product that can be replicated for large scale hydrogen facilities. FHS is also constructing a 4MW electrolyser stack testing facility as part of its adjacent electrolyser stack manufacturing facility.
Reporting to the Operations Superintendent – Hydrogen Production, the Senior Engineer - Hydrogen Production is a pivotal role for ensuring the seamless execution of operational processes, performing troubleshooting, and optimisation of the H2 production plants. The Senior Engineer - Hydrogen Production will play a critical role in identifying opportunities for improvement, implementing solutions, and maintaining a high standard of operational excellence.
This role will be involved with Operational Readiness activity for the Gladstone PEM50 and Gladstone Test Facility projects, prior to operational handover.
The role will require someone who is confident in moving in a fast-paced environment whilst ensuring related activities are performed in accordance with company policy, contractual agreements, quality standards, health, safety & environment requirements, financial targets, as well as schedule commitments.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Relevant tertiary technical qualification in engineering (E.g., Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical)
  • 8+ years’ experience in asset operations or production operations within complex chemical processing, oil and gas processing, or similar, with a strong understanding of production processes and equipment
  • Previous experience in an Operations Engineer role desirable
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues in a fast-paced operations environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams, influence stakeholders, and drive change within the organisational to achieve operational objectives
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques to support troubleshooting and assessment of plant operation
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, production demands, and business requirements in a dynamic environment, while maintaining focus on achieving operational requirements
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing techniques such as Six Sigma, Lean, 5S, etc
  • Knowledge of Australian and international codes, standards, and industry specifications

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures and verifies that operational activity is executed per the Fortescue Health and Safety policy and the Process Safety Management Framework
  • Diagnosing and resolving any operational issues or malfunctions that may affect the facility’s performance, safety, or reliability
  • Continuously evaluate the hydrogen production process to identify opportunities for safety, optimisation, efficiency improvements
  • Act as the focal point for plant issues and improvements requiring engineering support from the wider FHS team
  • Coordinating and supervising the work of contractors, technicians, and operators, and providing them with technical guidance and support
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, policies, and procedures, and reporting any incidents, deviations, or non-conformities
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate and timely records, reports, and documentation of the facility’s operation and maintenance activities
  • Lead incident investigations, continuous improvement initiatives and projects to optimise the plant’s safety, efficiency, productivity, and profitability
