Job Description and Duties
Under general direction of the Manager of the Climate Change and Innovative Technologies Section in the Statewide Technical and Analytical Resources (STAR) Branch, the Senior Environmental Scientist will perform the most difficult, complex and sensitive scientific and technical duties related to CalRecycle’s climate change initiatives. The incumbent will act as CalRecycle’s specialist for overseeing research of solid waste management activities and their effect on climate change. The incumbent’s expertise will be used to coordinate complex projects, manage climate change related contracts, and participate in strategic planning, policy-making working groups, and technical advisory panels.
The incumbent will provide technical expertise related to emerging organic management technologies, advanced chemical recycling technologies used to process recovered plastic materials, short-lived climate pollutant (SLCP) reduction strategies under SB 1383 (Lara, Chapter 395, Statutes of 2016), and emission impacts included in life cycle analyses and energy initiatives such as the Renewable Portfolio Standard, Low Carbon Fuel Standard, and biomethane procurement targets. The incumbent will also serve as the primary legislative contact for solid waste management issues pertaining to climate change. This position may involve travel throughout the state approximately 10% of the time.
This position requires that you possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your applications. This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense
