Description:

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. From the seabed to outer space, you can contribute to work that matters with a company where diversity, equity and inclusion are shared values. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.
The Airplane Performance team within Flight Sciences organization is looking for qualified Senior ETOPS Engineers to join the ETOPS/F&R/Cold Soak team in Everett, WA.
The primary focus for this team is ETOPS (Extended Operations) which ensures Boeing aircraft are designed, built, tested, and supported for extended operations (especially over water), enabling Boeing customers to fly long range missions in a more direct route to/from suitable airports. ETOPS is heavily regulated and has considerable certification aspects, including focus on safety, airplane maintenance and operational procedures. The team also covers Function & Reliability (F&R) to ensure that Boeing aircraft are reliable at Entry-Into-Service. Another area of responsibility is Cold Soak which involves ensuring operational procedures required to park and start an airplane in cold weather are properly written and validated, including testing to expose the airplane to cold conditions.
This work involves close coordination with Boeing engineers and certification specialists to ensure all activities required for ETOPS/F&R/Cold Soak certification of Boeing commercial and military commercial derivative airplanes are accomplished. As an ETOPS/F&R/Cold Soak Engineer, you will be supporting all airplane programs on new, amended, and/or supplemental type certification and major airplane modification programs. You will be expected to coordinate, plan, prepare, review and execute ETOPS/F&R/Cold Soak applicant certification work for ultimate submittal to the certification authorities, including the FAA, EASA, and other international validation bodies. This position will give the candidate opportunity to develop airplane level thinking and provide exposure to multiple disciplines/areas (such as propulsion, flight controls, avionics, safety, maintenance, regulatory administration) and many levels of program leadership throughout the Boeing Company.
Our team is currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including Senior (Level 4) and Senior (Level 5) ETOPS Engineers (Aero Performance).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 1+ years of experience with commercial aircraft certification.
  • 2+ years of experience leading or managing projects that involved cross-functional or cross-business unit teams.
  • 2+ years of experience in development programs (integration, test phases), production support, or sustainment engineering.
  • Must be willing to support local and remote flight testing on an as needed basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (DESIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • 8 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree within Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering Discipline.
  • Experience working with Extended Operations (ETOPS) Regulations and Standards.
  • Experience with airplane flight testing.
  • Working knowledge and experience developing/applying aviation related system safety analysis methods such as System Safety Risk Assessments, Fault-tree Analysis (FTA), Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA) and Safety Assessment Report (SAR).
  • Engineering Unit Member in other related skill (i.e., Propulsion, Systems, Avionics, etc.).

TYPICAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Senior (Level 4): Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years’ related work experience, Master+7 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Senior (Level 5): Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years’ related work experience, Master+12 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Responsibilities:

  • Using project management practices, prepare ETOPS/F&R/Cold Soak certification plans and manage deliverables to closure.
  • Work with engineers and engineering unit members (FAA representatives) across many areas (propulsion, systems, avionics, etc.) to obtain ETOPS certification of their ETOPS significant systems.
  • Develop analytical, reliability, and empirically based ETOPS assessment reports.
  • Review safety assessments (including Fault Tree Analysis) that pertain to ETOPS missions/diversions
  • Develop configuration and conformity requirements for ETOPS/F&R/Cold Soak including negotiating as required with Program, Regulatory Agencies, Suppliers, and Manufacturing/Quality.
  • Develop and validate Cold Weather Operating/Maintenance Procedures.
  • Work with the flight test organization to develop ETOPS/F&R/Cold Soak test requirements and support flight tests.
  • Resolve and document technical issues affecting ETOPS/F&R/Cold Soak certification.
  • Communicate with and/or lead meetings with regulatory agencies and other Boeing organizations.
  • Support airplane program meetings and project reviews.
  • Support customers (ETOPS/Cold Soak) and in-service reliability tracking (ETOPS).
