About the role
Our Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering business has a terrific opportunity for a Senior Technical Design Engineer to join our team based at our Basingstoke office.
Balfour Beatty’s Ground Engineering business is positioned as the UK’s leading specialist geotechnical contractor, drawing on its knowledge and expertise in delivering innovative piling and ground improvement solutions across all sectors, focussing on providing the solid foundations for buildings of any height, ranging from city skyscrapers to house foundation packages.
As a senior member of the design team, you will develop bids and tenders to secure work for the business. You’ll be responsible for creating innovative and challenging ground engineering solutions for each bid, maximizing our opportunities, and devising solutions that offer added value to the client while meeting their specifications. The business demands the safest and most efficient solutions for every tender and contract, achieving the desired quality metrics and adhering to the client’s delivery requirements.
What you’ll be doing

Other key responsibilities will be:

  • Ensuring compliance with design codes and standards, while supporting junior team members.
  • Collaborating with estimators to support the work-winning process and develop solutions that meet client requirements.
  • Creating ‘winning’ solutions through technical expertise and fostering key customer relationships.
  • Reviewing client drawings and specifications to prepare designs that are both code-compliant and meet client needs.
  • Examining tender documents and submission requirements.
  • Evaluating project and technical risks associated with the schemes.
  • Discussing and reviewing designs with the operations team to highlight and incorporate essential methods, programs, outputs, and plant selection.
  • Performing designer risk assessments.
  • Understanding market design solutions and benchmarking our solutions to enhance our success rate.
  • Finalizing contract designs for submissions to Structural Engineers after contract awards.
  • Making site visits and conducting technical audits to ensure compliance.

Who we’re looking for

You will have the following:

  • Civil engineering degree or similar
  • Substantial experience working in piling industry or the geotechnical industry
  • Must have a valid CSCS card.
  • Experience of designing geotechnical foundations (load bearing pile and retaining walls)
  • In depth technical and market knowledge of Ground Engineering
  • Ability to develop Repute and Plaxis abilities and train others in these activities
  • Results driven, and able to identify and implement opportunities to increase sales and profit or reduce costs
