GEMTEC currently has an opening for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer in our Fredericton, New Brunswick office location. The successful candidate will work with a diverse team of engineers, technicians, technologists and scientists on a variety of projects in support of general civil and geotechnical projects.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate would be a highly versatile candidate with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in Geotechnical Engineering (Civil or Geological Engineering programs may be suitable) from a recognized university. Masters or Doctorate degrees would be considered an asset.
  • Have at least 10 years of geotechnical engineering experience since graduation with a focus on geotechnical engineering.
  • Have excellent writen and verbal communication skills (English), strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage and prioritize several assignments at one time in order to deliver quality work on time and on budget.
  • Have geotechnical design experience in roads, bridges, dams, buildings, tunnelling etc.
  • Have experience with geotechnical software applications such as Slope/W, Seep/W, Sigma/W, Settle3D, FLAC, PLAXIS or similar.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Canada and be (or eligible to become) a Registered Professional Engineer with APEGNB.
  • Be motivated to provide excellent client service and enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Experience with tailings management facilities would be considered an asset.
  • Have experience mentoring junior and intermediate staffs
  • Experience with and ability to make informed decisions regarding intrusive and non-intrusive field investigations, basic and advanced laboratory testing and material characterization
  • Experience with field investigation techniques such as CPT, SPTand their utilization in the static and seismic design.
  • Experience in client service and business development.

Responsibilities:

Amongst other day-to-day responsibilities, the successful candidate will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage geotechnical programs including geotechnical field investigations, geotechnical analysis & design, construction supervision, material testing and report preparation for highways/ roads, bridges, buildings, marine & municipal infrastructure, geotechnical instrumentation, mines and dams
  • Conduct and review seepage, slope stability and deformation analysis of embankment dams using numerical modelling.
  • Evaluate stability of natural and engineered slopes, design retaining walls, reinforced soil slopes, and slope stabilizations
  • Complete the geotechnical design of shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, embankment dams, roadway embankments, railways, highways and airports, excavation support systems, tunnels, trenchless construction including horizontal directional drilling, staged embankment construction and ground improvement methods
  • Perform SLS and ULS bearing resistance calculations for shallow and deep foundations.
  • Support mining and civil based projects related to bridges, dams, waste dumps and stockpiles, water management infrastructure, and open pits
  • Support field work at project sites across the Atlantic Provinces and Eastern Canada as required
  • Support of site engineering team to provide technical solutions and timely responses to technical queries
  • Perform project management functions including proposal preparation, budget estimates, scheduling, client relations, manage scopes of work, prepare project summary reports, maintain quality throughout a project, and implement improvements when determined
  • Complete technical writing and review of proposals and project documents; prepare design drawings and specifications; develop construction and engineering cost estimates; prepare technical reports including recommendations
  • Mentor and supervise junior / intermediate staff
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships and be committed to ongoing business development efforts
  • Collaborate with other GEMTEC offices, particularly for larger projects and other multi-disciplinary assignments
  • Work as an integral team member locally and nationally in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Travel within Canada and internationally on short-term assignments as required
  • Work independently and in a team environment
  • Contribute to advancement of GEMTEC’s technical experience
  • Contribute to a culture of health, safety, and protection of the environment.
