    Your Team
    The Freedom of Information (FOI) Team is located within ASIC’s Legal Services Group.
    The FOI Team is responsible for managing ASIC’s obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the FOI Act). Members of the team are required to use technical expertise and judgement to make informed decisions within relevant timeframes, when managing and responding to requests for documents under the FOI Act.
    The Role

Responsibilities:

  • Acting as FOI decision maker in relation to more complex requests for access to documents (including requests for internal review) made under the FOI Act
  • Responding to requests for information from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) in relation to applications for OAIC review of FOI decisions. This may include briefing and instructing external counsel where appropriate
  • Contributing to ASIC’s internal FOI capability by providing sound advice and guidance to more junior staff in the FOI team as well as across ASIC generally
  • Assisting the Senior Manager, FOI to develop, promote and maintain best practice policies and procedures concerning the management of FOI requests within ASIC
  • Preparing internal reports and briefings concerning FOI related matters

About you

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the law, practice and policy relating to the FOI Act and its application to government agencies
  • Extensive experience in processing requests under the FOI Act at a senior level including conducting internal reviews and managing OAIC reviews.
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying FOI legislation and providing sound advice and guidance in relation to FOI matters at a senior level
  • Experience effectively presenting complex information to different target audiences through highly developed written and oral communication skills
  • Sound time management skills, with strong attention to detail
  • A client service focus with strong experience managing a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders and the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with those stakeholders
  • Bachelor of Law and/or post graduate qualifications in a relevant field
  • Eligible to hold (as a minimum) a Restricted Government Legal Practicing Certificate in NSW and /or another State or territory.
