We are currently looking for a Senior Lecturer in Applied Maternal and Newborn Health Research, to join Professor Charles Ameh in the Emergency Obstetric & Quality of Care Unit (EmOC&QoC) and the World Health Organisation Centre for Research in Maternal and Newborn Health.
The Centre conducts applied global health research focusing on the health of women and newborns living in low-and middle-income countries, and on understanding systematic factors that shape health and are inherently global. The current team conducts research in maternal and newborn health, with a strong emphasis on quality improvement of maternal and newborn health services.
The successful candidate will have an emerging international reputation in the field of SRH/MNH research and in this role, will work collaboratively with partners across the world to shape global thinking in maternal and newborn health by providing new ideas and insights.
Ideally, you will be from an obstetrics or midwifery discipline, but this is not an essential requirement. To enhance the current programmes of research, we seek an individual with a complementary portfolio of expertise, in areas such as (but not limited to) behaviour change, implementation/improvement science, perinatal epidemiology, perinatal mental health or health services research.

Responsibilities:

  • Initiate, develop, deliver, lead/manage and publish research, which is considered internationally excellent in MNH
  • Enhance the reputation, influence and profile of LSTM in Senior Lecturer in Applied Maternal and Newborn Health Research as applied to low and middle-income countries
  • Work with and lead academics in LSTM and its Global Hubs in developing cutting edge capacity for SRH/MNH research, enabling the development of new knowledge and understanding
  • Develop a research programme, planning and coordinating a broad research activity/sustain an extensive track record of highly rated published research findings and maintain an expert reputation in specialist subject area to an international level
  • Lead on innovative curriculum design and development of teaching methodology as applicable to own academic field
  • Introduce students to cutting edge research and its impact, delivering teaching to the quality standards expected of LSTM teaching programmes
  • Generate grant income/initiate opportunities for external funding, with a proven ability to attract significant high prestige funding
  • Liaise at high level with external bodies and participate effectively in complex negotiations, including leading and developing external partnerships and collaborations
  • Influence high level internal and external collaborations and demonstrate a successful record of driving positive change
  • Take leadership role in policy dialogue at regional, national and global levels that help effect change based on reliable research led evidence
  • Effectively lead, manage and mentor a team of academic and support staff, setting standards, monitoring progress & overseeing delegated areas of responsibility
  • Manage staff and financial resources for programme activities, effectively allocating workloads across the team
  • Advise/mentor junior staff on the planning and development of their careers
