Role/ Department: Sr Legal Counsel, Derivatives/Asset Servicing, Capital Markets
As a member of Northern Trust’s Legal Department, this attorney will be responsible for providing high quality legal advice and counsel to Global Foreign Exchange, Treasury and Swap Dealer Compliance. This includes serving as the senior legal advisor to our derivatives business globally, with a particular focus on currency and interest rate swaps. You will report to the Associate General Counsel, Head of Capital Markets Legal, North America and collaborate with colleagues based primarily in Chicago, London and Sydney.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Draft, review and negotiate agreements governing swaps, foreign exchange, collateral management, and related products and services.
  • Manage our program for the maintenance of jurisdictional requirements for regulatory capital netting and collateral enforceability across all relevant products and services.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience at a nationally recognized law firm or financial institution advising clients in the financial services industry
  • JD from an accredited law school and admitted to practice or willing to secure bar admission in the relevant jurisdiction
  • Drafting and negotiating master netting agreements such as ISDAs and CSAs, master repurchase agreements, and master securities loan agreements
  • Experience independently managing or leading deal teams or program implementation
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across inter-disciplinary teams to meet client needs
  • Exceptional writing and research skills, reflecting self-motivation, attention to detail and effective issue spotting
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with applicable banking, corporate, and securities laws and regulations, including one or more of the Bank Holding Company Act, Title VII of the Dodd Frank Act, US Basel III Capital Rules and ERISA
