Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.
We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Senior Legal Counsel.

Principal Responsibilities

  • The primary focus of the role is to ensure that consistently high-quality legal support is provided to the Markets and Securities Services (MSS) business in Singapore. This entails supporting MSS bankers and senior management, on a range of transactional and legal matters and playing a leading role on specific governance committees and taking lead roles in business-led projects and initiatives
  • With respect to the Securities Services business, the role is both advisory and transactional in nature and will support a business which is growing, high volume and with frequent demanding deadlines
  • With respect to the Markets business, the role is advisory in nature, including coordination with regional legal teams that support Markets documentation and transactions
  • The role will include direct management of any in-house FTE in this team, which is currently 3 full-time employees
  • Providing expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that legal and reputational risks of the MSS business are proactively identified and mitigated
  • Managing a team effectively via mentoring, providing value-added guidance, being an effective escalation point and setting good leadership examples generally
  • Ensuring that the legal function serves as a proactive and strategic partner to the business
  • Coordinating and managing relationships between internal and external stakeholders, businesses and support functions such as external clients, professional advisors, product bankers and compliance and risk functions
  • Being innovative and suggesting solutions that are pragmatic and commercially sound, in addition to being legally sound, aligned with HSBC’s strategy and within HSBC’s risk parameters
  • Assisting with the preparation, negotiation and review of legal documentation, particularly in the Securities Services business
  • Collaborating with internal lawyers, providing support, leadership and subject matter expertise and guidance as required
  • Providing legal input on local, regional and / or global legal projects
  • Promoting the adoption of best practice and documentation standards, including representing HSBC at industry associations (as required)
  • Monitoring major legislative changes and assessing the impact of such changes on HSBC’s business

Requirements

  • Qualified Lawyer with 10 years’ experience
  • Experienced and confident practitioner
  • Excellent transactional, negotiation and drafting skills and will have demonstrated the ability to take initiative and apply good commercial and legal judgment
  • Up-to-date knowledge of developments in own industry sector
  • Ability to handle a diverse range of issues, deal with new or unexpected situations and work under pressure, in particular for the Securities Services business
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and strong inter-personal skills
  • Lateral thinking/problem solving
  • Great sense of ownership and servicing mindset to ensure efficient and effective customer service processes
  • Strong execution skills and a self-starter who is able to work independently with an entrepreneurial drive
  • Ability to lead and act as an effective escalation point for team members
