Reporting to the Director, Research and Innovation (R&I), the Manager of “Centre of Industrial Simulation and Prototyping” is responsible for the efficient and effective technical management and operations of applied research and innovation activities conducted with internal and external partners (students, faculty, industry, community, etc.). This includes: leading technical aspects of the projects including but not limited to design, manufacturing commissioning, integration and testing of automated custom designed equipment, managing Centre’s day to day operations including financial records, budget planning and preparation, risk identification / mitigation, business case development, project planning and management, supervision of the centre’s staff, outreach to businesses and partners, liaison with faculty, staff, students and partners for project development, proposal development, cooperating with preparation of grant applications, project planning and execution, oversight of project progress, quality assurance, and client and supplier relationship management. The incumbent plays a key role in ensuring that the centre meets its goals and objectives. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead applied research projects with college faculty, staff, and industry partners.
  • Manage interdisciplinary research activities within each project to create cohesive deliverables.
  • Establish new research projects through outreach and discussions with external partners.
  • Develop project proposals and work plans in collaboration with faculty research leads, Project Managers, and industry partners.
  • Identify and prepare grant submissions for project-specific funding.
  • Provide technical expertise for applied research projects, including:
  • Concept Development
  • 3D modeling and 2D engineering drawings
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Commissioning and Integration
  • Test and troubleshooting
  • Foster communication and collaboration among faculty, staff, students, partners, and funders for effective project execution.
  • Coordinate dissemination activities, aiding Research Associates and student researchers in preparing materials, final reports, and metric collection.
  • Present research findings at both internal and external events, including conferences and seminars.
  • Identify and prepare grant submissions for project-specific funding.
  • Ensure financial and operational objectives and targets are met.
  • Plan, develop, and execute Centre’s annual budgets in collaboration with the department’s Director.
  • Prepare program costing and analysis for applied research program development.
  • Evaluate the Centre’s financial risks, prepare financial forecasts, and develop risk mitigation strategies.
  • Analyze monthly budget results, monitor variance, identify trends, and recommend actions for business decisions.
  • Lead the preparation of reporting to senior management and funding agencies.
  • Develop, monitor, and implement processes to ensure the proper execution of funding and project deliverables.
  • Provide support to the Director for reporting metrics
  • Provides direct supervision to Researchers, Student Researchers, and Research Assistants/Associates within the portfolio
  • Maintains a high level of staff performance through effective recruiting, selection, training, developing and evaluating of direct reports
  • Trains students, faculty and researchers on R&I processes and procedures, as needed
  • Represent Centre for Smart Manufacturing at external events and with stakeholders
  • Prepare communications materials on projects, such as success stories, case studies, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successfully completed a 4-year Degree program in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering Designation (P.Eng) is required.
  • A master’s degree in a relevant discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum nine years of experience in the field of automation and mechatronics.
  • Demonstrated extensive financial management experience including budget development and management.
  • Demonstrated Human Resources and Management experience in a unionized environment is required in order to effectively attract, hire, develop & supervise staff.
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills are required in order to effectively liaise with senior management, all levels of staff, students, government and industry partners
  • Advanced level computer skills with Design Software including but not limited to SolidWorks in addition to MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
