Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director, Enterprise Tax, the Senior Manager, Enterprise Tax will be responsible for Enterprise Tax activities, including research, monitoring of and reporting on tax risks that may impact either the pension plan or its investments, and overseeing all domestic and international tax (excluding U.S.) compliance obligations. The Senior Manager will support the Associate Director to ensure proper oversight of all tax matters related to legislative and regulatory requirements.
What you will do:

Tax Research

  • Proactively monitor and analyze relevant domestic and foreign information sources including legislation and regulation, court rulings, advisor alerts, and published circulars to identify and assess tax changes that may impact HOOPP, including its pension plan or investments.
  • Independently analyze and research information to ensure evidence of the research, impacts, and recommendations are appropriately documented in detail and in a consistent manner.
  • Engage with and manage external advisors to ensure tax matters impacting HOOPP are properly understood and documented.
  • Identify, analyze and provide recommendations to the Associate Director, Enterprise Tax, the Senior Director, Taxation, or other relevant parties, as applicable, on an efficient and timely basis of new and changing requirements impacting the organization.
  • Lead the development of new processes within HOOPP ensuring that legislative tax changes are responded to with appropriate changes in HOOPP practices and processes in a timely and appropriate way.
  • Maintain and ensure completeness and accuracy of desk procedures.

Tax Compliance

  • Assist the Associate Director, Enterprise Tax in monitoring HOOPP’s global tax compliance (excluding U.S.) (approximately 200 returns in more than 9 jurisdictions) and reporting responsibilities, including income tax, indirect tax, and withholding tax that are either prepared in-house or outsourced to external tax service providers.
  • Assist in monitoring all global tax compliance (excluding U.S.), including tax compliance related to foreign offices and managing external tax service providers as needed. Perform tax account review to ensure the global tax compliance obligations (excluding U.S) are within HOOPP’s risk profile.
  • Maintain record-keeping to document relevant tax responsibilities, deadlines, assumptions, methodologies, checklists, etc.
  • Assist with reviews, audits, disputes, and assessments initiated and performed by the CRA and other tax authorities, domestic and foreign, as appropriate. Work closely with all divisions within HOOPP such as Legal Services, Plan Operations, Investment Management, and Finance to resolve tax reviews and audits.

Tax Risk Monitoring

  • Collaborate with the Associate Director, Enterprise Tax, to develop a tax risk register by ensuring tax risks and related mitigants are adequately documented.
  • Ensure tax advice and supporting documents related to the plan or its investments are appropriately maintained and documented.
  • Document key tax assumptions and attributes affecting tax compliance for senior leaders at HOOPP.

What you bring:

  • 10+ years of work experience in Taxation with a minimum of 2 years of work experience in transaction taxation
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, with completion or enrollment in CPA Canada In-depth Tax Course
  • Excellent research and analysis skills, along with prior experience working with tax research software
  • In-depth knowledge of tax laws, especially those pertaining to tax-exempt pension plans
  • Strong knowledge of the pension industry and investment products and strategies. Work experience at a pension fund is an asset
  • Exceptional communication skills, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
  • University degree, (B. Comm, M. TAX, etc.)
