Description:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Pr.Eng (Mechanical/Civil). Registered professional engineer. At least 6 to 10 years of experience post B.Eng qualification.
  • At least 4 to 5 years of specialized experience in pumping and pipeline system engineering designs.
  • Previous knowledge (or aspirations to develop knowledge) in the specialized field of slurry pipeline design for tailings projects.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency in using hydraulic surge analysis software (such as Bentley Hammer) will be of value.
  • Experience in INVENTOR software will be an advantage.
  • Experience developing cost estimates for projects. Estimates must have taken into account construction sequencing, material sourcing and installation for large scale projects.
  • High consideration will be given to academic background.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to travel locally and abroad when required.

Responsibilities:

JOB PURPOSE

To supplement the skillset and offering of the pump station and pipeline systems engineering team at the Knight Piésold office in Durban/Umhlanga (or possibly the Johannesburg/Sandton office). To provide assistance with the mechanical and civil engineering design, costing, tender documentation, installation and commissioning of various pump station and pipeline systems across the world for mining and general infrastructure projects.
Project work may typically involve systems for bulk water supply, potable and waste water distribution, long distance pipelines, boreholes, open pit and mine underground dewatering, tailings slurry pipelines, return water systems, tailings paste and backfill distribution within mines, in-plant piping, acid mine drainage and other.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and schedule project development, define the scope of work and prepare proposals to clients.
  • Conduct site visit investigations when required by the project.
  • Coordinate topographical survey work and slurry and pipeline testing work where required as input for the design.
  • Review and evaluate existing terrain and infrastructure information to identify preferred and alternative pipeline routes as well as to identify installation configuration options.
  • Develop mechanical and civil design criteria, equipment and flow diagrams, operating and control philosophies.
  • Perform pipeline system hydraulic designs, 3D modelling and surge analysis.
  • Perform pipeline stress analysis calculations.
  • Perform pump selections and engineering design calculations to specify and size pumps, motors, control valves, regulators, relief valves, pipework and other associated mechanical equipment.
  • Design and detailing of pump stations, valve stations and tank assemblies. Good drafting capabilities and experience in using 3D AutoCAD software (such as AutoCAD Inventor) for detailing mechanical assemblies is of key importance.
  • Preparation of mechanical and civil technical tender documentation such as bill of quantities, technical/particular specifications and equipment datasheets.
  • Preparation of engineering cost estimates and requesting price estimates from mechanical equipment suppliers.
  • Technical report writing.
  • Perform mechanical and civil commissioning of pump station and pipeline systems.
  • Manage and coordinate small projects.
