Responsibilities:

AS OUR SENIOR PLANNING COMPLIANCE OFFICER, YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Assisting in responding to Councillors’ inquiries and requests related to specific development application issues promptly and accurately.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to address planning compliance matters collaboratively.
  • Representing the City in legal proceedings as necessary, demonstrating a strong understanding of relevant laws and regulations.
  • Collecting evidence, preparing reports, and providing recommendations on prosecutions, including attendance at Court or State Administrative Tribunal when required.
  • Offering expert planning compliance advice to management, the general public, and Council to ensure the City’s planning standards are upheld.
  • Informing the public and provide advice on the City’s policy position regarding compliance matters and legal enforcement options, whether through phone, email, counter inquiries, or meetings.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL POSSESS:

  • Tertiary qualification in Urban and Regional Planning, or a related discipline
  • Current ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence.
  • Experience with the practices and processes associated with the issue of notices, infringements and complaints, prosecutions and the collection and giving of evidence in both a court and at the SAT.
  • A senior level of understanding the broad functions of Local Government, particularly in relation to the Local Government Act, Planning and Development Act 2005, Planning and Development (Local Planning Schemes) Regulations 2015 Local Planning Schemes.
  • High level knowledge and understanding of Western Australian planning legislation and local government statutory processes
  • Experience in conducting compliance investigations and in applying planning legislation to planning compliance matters.
  • Experience in undertaking negotiation and conflict resolution processes.
  • Sound experience interpreting maps and plans.
  • Experience in mentoring and staff supervision.
  • Effective leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly developed investigative, research and complex professional problem-solving skills.
