MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to six (6) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as criminal justice, human services or related field. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Alpha I Status: Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status. Must be able to be obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification. Must be able to obtain and maintain National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certification. Must be able pass the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office Investigation and obtain/maintain unescorted access to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center. Must pass Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Core Competencies for Local Probation and Pretrial Practices.

The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire a Senior Pretrial Probation Officer who has experience working with individuals with Mental Health and Substance Abuse disorders with Local Probation and Pretrial Services and experience training and coaching peers and/or co-workers for the Community Corrections and Pretrial Services program.

  • Review work of Pretrial Probation Officers, conduct case reviews and provide necessary training.
  • Supervise a reduced caseload using Evident Based Practices (EBP), supervision guidelines, and standards as set by Virginia Beach Community Corrections Pretrial, Standard Operations Procedure (SOP) and the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
  • Schedule, assign and coordinate the flow of cases.
  • Assist with evaluating services, policies, and procedures.
  • Review court orders regularly and maintain a close working relationship with the courts.
  • Ensure that all referrals are scheduled for intake in a timely manner.
  • Perform interviews to determine resources needs.
  • Screen, interview and investigate pretrial defendants; complete pretrial risk assessments; conduct court ordered substance abuse screenings or facilitate the preparation of assessments pursuant to state approved protocols.
  • Supervise referred individuals using evidence-based practices, supervision guidelines, standards set by Virginia Beach Community Corrections Policies, directives, guidelines, DCJS, and Virginia State Code.
  • Maintain physical and digital records and reports as required by the DCJS, DHS, and Community Corrections policies, directives, and guidelines; Maintain documentation in the DCJS approved electronic case management system.
  • Develop and implement any programs as assigned.
  • Acts as a designated subject matter expert within division; provides guidance to lower-level staff.
  • Required to develop and facilitate training for peers and coworkers called Learning Teams or Peer team with topics around Motivational Interviewing, Addressing Criminogenic Needs, and Risk Assessments etc.
  • Required to facilitate and coordinate other trainings as assigned.
  • Based on agency needs hours may require additional flexibility to include varied schedule that may include evenings or weekends
