ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Senior Process Engineer will own process development for the commercialization of new personal care products across a variety of product types, including cold process soap, hot pours, surfactant blends, and emulsions. This role will lead the design of manufacturing processes and scale-up of products from laboratory to pilot scale and full-scale production in close collaboration with our internal manufacturing team and contract manufacturers. While this role sits within the Product Development function, the Senior Process Engineer will partner very closely with our Production, Supply Chain and Quality teams to ensure the quality of our products and processes and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
This position will also be an important part of the product development team responsible for bringing new and innovative personal care products to life. Dr. Squatch is best known for our bar soaps, and this role will be a key contributor to the development efforts for new soap launches and new product categories. An interest in contributing to new ideas and excitement about product development is key. The ideal candidate will balance the technical and scientific requirements of the role with the creative side of product development and problem-solving.
This is a full-time role with company benefits based in Marina del Rey, California, reporting to the Director of R&D. Regular travel to our manufacturing plant in Brea, California, and to contract manufacturers will be required.
The anticipated base compensation range for this role will be $100,000 to $140,000. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and local market rates.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Own all aspects of process development and scale-up for new products, including working with our R&D laboratory to understand formula attributes and establish critical process parameters, coordinating materials for scale up activities, monitoring production for full scale tests of formulas, and troubleshooting or iterating as needed to finalize formula and process
  • Partner with our internal Production team and contract manufacturers to determine the optimal order and duration of operations such as mixing, dispersion, heat transfer, emulsification, and saponification
  • Create supporting documentation for formulas to ensure products can be effectively produced at scale, including process flow diagrams, recipes for manufacturing, and final product specifications
  • Represent the Product Development team as the technical expert for internal manufacturing projects, including on-site support for new equipment testing, supporting process changes, and proactively identifying areas for improvement based on efficiency, ergonomics, and reliability
  • Collaborate with Product Development team on new product development concepts, bringing creative ideas to brainstorming sessions and using technical expertise to provide guidance on the manufacturing and scale up implications of new ideas
  • Provide technical guidance to our Production and Quality teams when issues arise with regular on-site support of non-conformances, trending consumer complaints, and other technical issues
  • Collaborate with our Supply Chain team on supply chain reliability projects such as technical transfer of existing formulas to additional manufacturing partners and confirming technical feasibility of secondary sourcing options for raw materials
