Description:

A position exists, for a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on telecoms standards.
The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
The purpose of this role is to contribute to the development of telecoms standards (wired and/or wireless), such as those established by 3GPP and IEEE. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in telecommunications research, with a particular emphasis on 3GPP and IEEE standards. This role is crucial in shaping the future of telecommunication standards, ensuring that the research outputs from the Federated Telecoms Hubs are effectively presented in global standardisation forums, and recent trends in those standardisation forums are reported back to Federated Hubs Researchers.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a PhD degree and substantial experience in relevant field, and preferably experience in standardisation processes in an industrial setting.
Experience

Essential:

  • In-depth understanding of telecommunications principles, technologies, and systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the ISO/OSI 7-layer model and how different technologies fit within this framework.
  • Proficiency in various wireless (e.g., 5G, Wi-Fi, LiFi) and wired communication technologies (e.g., fibre optics, Ethernet).
  • Familiarity with networking protocols, interfaces and architectures.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

Essential:

  • In-depth understanding of the telecommunications sector.
  • Being able to evaluate the merits of different technical approaches and anticipating potential challenges.
  • Deep understanding of a telecoms standard and staying updated with the latest advancements in telecom technologies and standards.
  • Predicting how the telecom sector will evolve and preparing strategies to guide standardisation efforts.
  • Organising and managing projects to develop standards, including timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Engaging with other stakeholders to reach agreement on standards.

Personal Attributes

Essential:

  • The ability to analyse technical specifications and identify key areas for standardisation.
  • Writing clear and concise technical documents for standards proposals.
  • Effectively presenting ideas and technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Working effectively within a team of engineers and other professionals.

Appointment at Senior Research Associate level is dependent on significant experience as a postdoctoral research associate or equivalent, with proven impact from authored publications.
Salary Ranges: Senior Research Associate: £45,585 - £57,696
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2025 in the first instance.
