Description:
OVERVIEW:
The Quantum Sensing and Computing Group (https://www.ornl.gov/group/quantum-computing-sensing) in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks candidates for a senior research staff position in experimental quantum information science, especially pertaining to ion trap quantum computing and sensing.
We are looking for an experienced scientist who will focus on leading and taking part in multiple R&D projects, formulating novel quantum information solutions to problems of national interest to plan and implement the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Ph.D. in physics, optics, engineering, or a directly related field.
- 10 or more years of quantum information work experience at a tertiary institution or in an appropriate industry or government laboratory.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Independent research competence as proven by a significant number of national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication record.
- Proven ability to secure research funding from sponsors (federal or within the private sector)
- Proven ability to lead research teams/efforts.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in new and ongoing research in quantum computing, quantum-enhanced sensing, quantum communication.
- Formulate novel quantum information solutions to problems of national interest and to plan and implement the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
- Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects.
- Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national[MA1] and international audiences at all levels.
- Work with customers independently or in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration.
- Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.
- Represent ORNL as a subject matter expert.
- Promote the development of junior researchers through scientific leadership and mentorship.
