Description:

Transport & Environment (T&E), the leading European NGO promoting cleaner transport, is offering a UK based position for a senior researcher (data analyst), starting from September 2024.
You will join T&E’s Trends and Analysis team, our home for research, transport modelling and data analysis. You will report to the team’s Director, and lead a team of up to three analysts not based in the UK who work on files across Europe. Your own project work will primarily be directed by T&E’s UK office, where work will be driven by the opportunities to shape and set transport policy in the UK.
Opportunities to contribute to other work programmes may arise based on capacity and interest. You will play a key role in the organisation by coordinating national level analysis and ensuring high standards across T&E’s national offices. This is in alignment with T&E’s strategy to bolster our national level impact.
T&E prides itself on developing data and evidence based transport policy for the EU and the UK. Your work will have a significant and lasting impact as we work with policy makers, advisory bodies and a coalition of civil society in the UK. In the UK, our analysis made the case for the zero emissions vehicle mandate, the biggest single carbon cutting policy the UK government has. Transport is the largest emitting sector in the UK - your work will make sure transport plays its part in getting to net zero.
Our working environment fosters learning and professional development. We value ideas and afford our colleagues the agency and autonomy to develop evidence and argument based solutions to our complex transport decarbonisation challenges. We work on issues that can have a positive impact on the way we travel, on our health and on the climate.
We are looking for someone who can apply appropriate quantitative analytical tools and techniques, and synthesise evidence from a range of sources, to support our mission in creating a sustainable transport system. This will include assessing the reliability and relevance of evidence and giving objective evidence-based advice to shape policy and public narrative of transport issues. The right candidate will have a keen interest and experience guiding others and helping develop their skills.
This position requires someone with an engineering, economist, or scientific background with experience in transport and energy modelling and research or related fields.

5+ years relevant or equivalent professional experience in transport economics or transport policy.

  • Experience or expertise in detailed quantitative analysis such as data analysis, regression analysis and modelling (e.g. economic modelling) are required

Responsibilities:

  • Line management of up to three analytical staff in relevant areas, which entails looking after the wellbeing, career development and growth, and attainment of expertise of our research analysts.
  • Mentoring - passing on hard and soft skills in analysis and communication; be a first line of contact to support their work.
  • Leadership - bring out the best in direct colleagues and across the organisation. Take a leading role on T&E’s analytical and research work for UK based topics.
  • Deliver economic/transport modelling or analysis on the impacts of UK transport policy.
  • Write reports and policy briefings that detail these impacts and the policy changes that would help deliver them.
  • Present research findings internally and externally.
  • Support T&E’s analytical work in other work programmes when additional capacity is required.
  • Review T&E analytical outputs to ensure a high degree of research, analysis, and argumentation. This includes quality-assuring models, challenging input data and assumptions and interpreting output data.
  • Provide input to T&E’s policy and communication strategies.
  • Promote the use of internal procedures, identifying inefficiencies or other organisational issues.
  • Promote informed discussion on contemporary transport debates among T&E analysts and across the organisation.
  • Network with communities of UK and European transport analysts to ensure a two-way flow of relevant findings
