Description:
At HR Wallingford, we design smart, resilient solutions across the natural and built environments to help everyone live and work more sustainably with water. By harnessing research, data insights and the power of our collective expertise, we help the world to better understand the changing influence and impact of water.
We are recruiting for a Senior Engineer/Scientist to join our Coasts and Oceans group. You will be involved in using data and models to predict present-day and future winds, waves, water levels and currents for engineering design and environmental impact assessments in the marine environment. Our work is varied both in technical challenges and geography and ranges from new planned tidal power schemes and offshore wind farm developments to port and harbour developments and other coastal infrastructure developments. Projects may be local or national in scale.
Analysis and interpretation of measured and hindcast metocean data will be an important part of the role. Contributing to metocean / computational wave and wind modelling studies, you will work with our experienced teams to run and develop both wave and flow models for consultancy and research projects. In addition, you will help with client management for projects and proposals. You will have the opportunity to be actively involved in developing in-house tools and models, and you will contribute to our ambitious internal research programme.
As with all our roles we offer flexible working arrangements, training and development opportunities and pride ourselves on our collaborative, inclusive and supportive work environment.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
You will have a good engineering or scientific degree in a relevant subject and either a higher degree (MSc/Meng or PhD) or a solid amount of professional experience in a relevant field (oceanography. meteorology, applied mathematics, physics, civil engineering). Proven experience of estimating metocean extreme values for design criteria, including the quantification of uncertainties would be beneficial.
Experience in the application of wave and wind models (e.g SWAN, SWASH, WRF, WASP) and programming using one or more language (Python, Matlab, R) is desired. You will enjoy working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams and will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with good attention to detail and report writing skills.
