The Forecast Quality team in the Research Program develops and implements new techniques to verify and evaluate the Bureau’s forecasts and warnings. Working closely with the Performance Assessment team in the Research to Operations (R2O) program, our team of scientists and software engineers incorporates new verification approaches into the Jive and METplus verification systems, develops displays and dashboards for visualising outputs, and assists others to use these systems. The evidence enabled by this team guides improvements to objective forecast guidance (numerical weather prediction models and post-processed guidance) and operational forecast production practices in the Community Services Group.
We are looking for an experienced software engineer to provide technical leadership for the team of software developers who are building, implementing and enhancing the Jive forecast verification system. Drawing on a deep understanding of the technology, the occupant of this position will lead the development of complex software written in Python and run on a Linux platform, troubleshoot technical issues, and contribute to the strategic planning of system enhancements. They will have extensive experience in employing best practices in software development and continuous delivery, such as version control, automated testing, code reviews, configuration management, and documentation, and assist team members in these practices.
The officer will collaborate with software architects, DevOps Services and Application Services teams in the Data and Digital Group to ensure successful software delivery, and will provide expert technical advice to science and project leaders in the Science and Innovation Group. They will have highly developed professional skills, and will be experienced in working collaboratively in teams, as well as taking responsibility for the technical quality of critically important operational verification systems. Specifically, they will have teamwork and leadership skills appropriate to the Executive Level 2 classification in the Australian Government Public Service’s Integrated Leadership System.
