The Forecast Quality team in the Research Program develops and implements new techniques to verify and evaluate the Bureau’s forecasts and warnings. Working closely with the Performance Assessment team in the Research to Operations (R2O) program, our team of scientists and software engineers incorporates new verification approaches into the Jive and METplus verification systems, develops displays and dashboards for visualising outputs, and assists others to use these systems. We are looking for an experienced software engineer to provide technical leadership for the team of software developers who are building, implementing and enhancing the Jive forecast verification system. Drawing on a deep understanding of the technology, the occupant of this position will lead the development of complex software written in Python and run on a Linux platform, troubleshoot technical issues, and contribute to the strategic planning of system enhancements. They will have extensive experience in employing best practices in software development and continuous delivery, such as version control, automated testing, code reviews, configuration management, and documentation, and assist team members in these practices.
The officer will collaborate with software architects, DevOps Services and Application Services teams in the Data and Digital Group to ensure successful software delivery, and will provide expert technical advice to science and project leaders in the Science and Innovation Group.
