Within S&T Nokia Standards (NSD), we drive Nokia’s technology leadership by developing and bringing innovative concepts to industry and standardization organizations. NSD also works within the ecosystems to ensure an inventor friendly industry environment, favourable to Nokia’s business success. The unit has a strategic objective of anticipating, shaping, and protecting future technologies and systems and ensuring appropriate standards and industry specifications are developed.
Research in NSD comprises fundamental systematic research of an exploratory nature for developing new products and services as well as disruptive technologies superseding conventional approaches. It covers the provision of a comprehensive understanding of scientific insights, specifically leading to standardization of ideas and concepts for 5G advanced technologies and beyond.

As part of our team, you will:

  • Conduct extensive fundamental scientific research on the 3GPP User Plane radio protocol stack with expertise aiming at fuller, more complete knowledge and understanding of the fundamental aspects of concepts and building blocks of the user plane radio protocol and architecture. This also covers disruptive innovations and the provision of novel solutions while building up robust intellectual property for Nokia.
  • In the context of the 3GPP User Plane radio protocol stack, conduct research projects investigating fundamental scientific and conceptual problems to break new ground, which could lead to new inventions, new or enhanced products, or new business or market opportunities through disruptive and innovative solutions and create a substantial competitive advantage by generating company intellectual property.
  • Demonstrate sustained measurable business and/or scientific impact and regularly drive progress as a technical lead of research teams. You will be internally and externally recognized for contributions and provide measurable input into new products, processes, standards or operational plans supporting the organization’s business strategies, impacting business unit/ function overall results.
  • Carry out specialized activities/projects according to general direction and influence others to support decisions. You will work mostly independently but analyze wider community situations or data requiring relevant factors review. By doing so, you will demonstrate success in multiple roles and show adaptability to manage complex, changing business environments.
  • Communicate with parties within and outside of own job function and teams, and typically have responsibilities for communicating with external parties, which may include customers or vendors. You will work to influence others to accept the job functions view/practices and agree/accept new concepts, practices, and approaches. You are mandated to have a cross-cultural knowledge and global mindset and require the ability to communicate with executive leadership regarding matters of significant importance to the organization.

You have:

  • a passion and mindset to create the technology enablers for advancing radio standards- demonstrated significant technical leadership and experience with a standards based research (e.g., 3GPP) in the user plane radio protocol stack area over one or more generations of OFDM based radio technologies (e.g., E-UTRAN and NR)
  • Strong technical background in system level simulator development, deep understanding of all aspects of system simulations, including hands-on experience in using system level simulators in 3GPP standardization.
  • contributed to the research, design, development, and standardization and knows how standards influence product architecture and design choices (e.g., eNB and gNB products)
  • been actively creating patentable concepts that are mappable to a technical specification-
  • excellent written and interpersonal communication and, ability to forge great working relationships and being able to communicate in a rational and logical manner-
  • good working knowledge of software implementation and hardware pertaining to radio communication systems
  • at least 10 years of experience in 3GPP User Plane radio protocol stack with a Master’s degree in Electronics/Communication/Computer Science
  • strong professional ethics, open and fearless communication, ability to self-correct and rectify mistakes quickly
