Mott MacDonald Canada is currently involved in several major infrastructure projects in the rail and transit realms. We are currently seeking Senior System Safety Engineers/Specialists to complement our team and assist with infrastructure assignments for public and private-sector clients.
You will have the opportunity to work for Canadian clients such as TransLink, Edmonton Transit, City of Calgary and Metrolinx as well as supporting capital projects in other geographic locations including the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand tapping into the expertise of our global practices.

Our Rail Systems Practice is looking for a Senior System Safety Engineer/Specialist located in Alberta or British Columbia to join our growing team in western Canada. This role will report to the Systems Assurance Lead for Canada. To perform this role successfully, the individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Working with other Systems Engineering and Assurance team members and with multi-discipline project staff on the delivery of key assurance and engineering processes and practices within Mott MacDonald’s North American practices.
  • Lead Safety engineering activities on projects.
  • Undertake system assessment using both EN 50126 and CMREA (CSA R114:22)
  • Lead System Safety analyses and associated activities (including FTAs and FMECAs)
  • Manage and maintain Hazard Logs/Records
  • Lead SIL analysis and SIL allocations (including THRs, TFFRs)
  • Lead hazard identification / risk assessment workshops
  • Lead project safety meetings
  • Lead interaction with Regulators, Safety Bodies and ISAs
  • Assist in the verification and validation of Rail Control systems
  • Interaction with, and direct support to colleagues across Mott MacDonald
  • Work with key delivery partners and service providers for projects.
  • Engage with end clients as and when necessary

The ideal candidate will have the following experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering/Science (preferably Software/Engineering Physics/Systems Engineering).
  • P.Eng in Alberta, BC, or eligible to register
  • Minimum 8-10 years of progressive experience in System Assurance/RAMS engineering and assessment with significant experience in rail and transit projects.
  • Demonstrable strength in a minimum of two of the following (with working knowledge of the remainder):
  • EN 50126
  • CMREA (CSA R114:22) or CSM RA
  • Hazard identification and management
  • Safety Integrity Level (SIL) identification and apportionment (EN 50126/IEC 61508)
  • Safety Case development
  • Safety Certification (EN 51026)
  • Safety Risk Assessment (CMREA)
  • Experience in interpreting legislation especially related to Common Safety Method and application on assurance and safety engineering projects
  • Experience in in carrying out CMREA (CSA R114:22) from an assessment body perspective and a project perspective
  • Exceptional technical writing and verbal communications skills, with the ability to communicate complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to plan, lead and document technical meetings and conversations with clients, contractors, suppliers and regulators
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplined team
  • Able to hold competent technical discussions with Client representatives
  • Able to interface with domain specialists, design managers and construction project managers, in a competent professional manner.
  • Broad knowledge and experience of delivery within major rail infrastructure/system projects and / or operation within technology development and implementation projects.

  • In compliance with the B.C. Pay Transparency Act, the expected salary range is from $125,000 - $150,000
    Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience and position responsibilities will be used to determine the successful candidate’s actual salary within the expected range.
