An attorney to serve as day-to-day legal advisor for BNY Mellon’s US registered investment advisor (RIA) firms. These include Newton Investment Management, Walter Scott & Partners and Mellon Investments. This attorney will be part of a larger team of legal professionals who will also be available to provide investment legal support for other investment management affiliates and related businesses. The ideal candidate will have a good working knowledge of laws and regulations in the field of investment management, practical expertise of negotiating investment advisory contracts as well as broader regulatory and/or investment advisory experience.

Responsibilities:

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:

Day-to-day legal support to BNY Mellon’s RIAs.
Advise on varied and potentially complex legal and regulatory matters relating to distribution and provision of investment advisory services.
Negotiate and draft investment advisory agreements with clients including, among others, sovereign wealth funds, government-/state- related entities and pension plans.
Work with Compliance teams in interpreting and applying investment advisory rules, as well as international regulations, to the business; and in creating the investment firms’ policies and procedures.
Serve as a point person for the Legal Department on key initiatives. This will at times include coordinating with global colleagues and other stakeholders on time sensitive matters.
Lead in providing proactive and pragmatic advice and guidance in the development of new product/service initiatives.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE, WE’RE SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

Qualified attorney
A minimum of 3+ years’ post-qualification experience through relevant private practice and/or in-house
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to collaborate proactively with business colleagues and deliver clear, succinct advice.
Experience in dealing with RIAs with good technical skills including sound knowledge of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and related SEC rules/regulation applicable to RIAs.
Ability to deal with a varied workload in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to prioritize matters and be adaptable.
Ability to build relationships with a variety of different internal clients.
Pragmatic, someone who looks for solutions rather than obstacles. The legal team is seen as a business partner and the successful candidate will be comfortable relating to and dealing with business colleagues as the role will involve frequent interaction with business colleagues.
Ability to identify and manage legal risks.
A clear communicator, concise and able to deliver legal advice in layman’s terms.
A team player. The ability to work harmoniously and responsively with one’s colleagues and clients is an essential pre-requisite for the role.
