Title: (Senior) Weather Strategist
Location: London or Düsseldorf
JOB DESCRIPTION
We develop, own and operate renewable power production facilities, and are also involved in the trading and origination of power, gas, and renewable certificates from our own projects and those of third parties.
Statkraft’s Weather Trading team builds and executes a portfolio of quantitative trading strategies based on meteorological and power market models. To achieve this, highly qualified meteorologists, strategists and data scientists collaborate in order to generate unique insights. The team heavily utilizes weather and power market data.
As a (Senior) Weather Strategist, you will
- create and improve weather forecasts for our portfolios across Europe based on a wide range of numerical weather forecasts and statistical models,
- contribute to daily trading decisions by analysing latest weather forecasts and doing analogue analysis based on historical weather data,
- integrate applied research into weather forecasting and atmospheric predictability, visualise and communicate weather variations on different spatial and temporal scales using multiple weather forecast products,
- develop statistical arbitrage strategies for power and gas markets based on insights into mid-range weather evolution.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for a Meteorologist with a degree or other relevant experience in NWP models and
- Experience in handling large weather data sets from various formats.
- Experience with ensemble forecast verification, knowledge about the strengths and weaknesses of ensemble predictions.
- Experience with ECMWF forecasts and other predictions of atmospheric variability from sub-seasonal to seasonal ensemble forecast data.
- Strong interest in short-term energy markets, renewable energy, algorithms and data science.
- Strong interest to contribute to the energy transition and work for the largest producer of renewable energy in Europe
- Experience and willingness to interpreting and presenting weather forecasts, good presentation skills.
- Highly analytical, data driven individual with advanced statistical & machine learning skills.
- Modelling and programming experience (preferably in Python).
- Highly collaborative and reliable person, excellent communication skills, team player.
- Strong commercial mindset, interest in energy trading and high level of initiative and self-motivation.
