QUALIFICATIONS/LICENCES:

Essential:

  • Heavy Combination Truck (HC) licence.
  • Grader (LG) licence, or willingness to obtain.
  • Loader (LL) licence.
  • Construction White Card.
  • Workzone Traffic Management accreditation.
  • First Aid Certificate.

Desirable:

  • Certificate 3 in Civil Construction.
  • Skid Steer (LS) licence.
  • Elevated Work Platform (High Risk WP) licence.
  • Manual handling.
  • Chain of Responsibility (COR).
  • iResponda.
  • Chainsaw.
  • ChemCert.

EXPERIENCE:

Essential:

  • Substantial experience in safely operating a Heavy Combination Truck and Loader.
  • Proven ability and experience to safely operate a Grader, or willingness to learn.
  • Experience in traffic control and roadworks signage.

EXPERIENCE CONT’D:

Desirable:

  • Construction, final trim and patrol grading operations experience.
  • Ability to operate a Skid Steer.
  • Ability to operate an Elevated Work Platform.

SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated experience in plant operation.
  • Basic knowledge and operational skills in the use of technology tools, including Personal

Computer (PC) and or android-based tablet/phone.

  • Ability to learn quickly the concepts and operation of tablet based applications currently being

utilised by the Council.

  • Ability to communicate with staff, contractors and the public in a courteous manner.
  • Self-motivation and time management skills.
  • Ability to work with limited direction.
  • Ability to contribute as part of a team and harmoniously work with others to achieve team

objectives.

  • High standard of customer service skills and demonstrated ability to direct and assist

residents/ratepayers with confidence.

  • At all times be well presented and groomed.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Sound knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform plant maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of traffic control, roadworks signage and safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of relevant safe work processes, procedures and responsibilities under the Work

Health and Safety Act.

  • Knowledge of Local Government’s role in the community and the inter-relationship with other

spheres of Government.

Responsibilities:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Construction, final trim and patrol grading operations.
  • Operation of vehicles, including trucks, tractors and loaders.
  • Undertake routine maintenance checks with regard to safe legal operation, fluid levels and

lubrication points, and report any problems through the correct channels.

  • Undertake manual tasks in the execution of duties required for the construction and

maintenance of roads, drains, footpaths and kerb water tables to maximise organisational and

customer efficiency.

  • Ensure prestart checks are undertaken on all plant and equipment.
  • Construction and maintenance of roads, drains, footpaths, kerb water tables and other works,

as required.

  • Undertake traffic management responsibilities, including the creation of plans and staffing of

work points.

  • Assembly and maintenance of road and traffic signage, both permanent and temporary, as

required by the relevant legislation.

  • Maintenance and cleaning duties for depot and Council facilities.
  • Provide relief operation of any maintenance vehicles under the relevant Award range.
  • Carry out other duties as directed by the Coordinator Construction or maintenance, or the

delegated authority.

  • Construction and maintenance of road infrastructure, open space, parks, gardens and

reserves and other associated recreational facilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES CONT’D:

  • Carry out all duties and functions in a manner that promotes a positive attitude and team

based approach, with strong support of organisational values.

  • Willingness to learn the operation of earthmoving equipment, eg excavators, graders and to

progressively upgrade licence classifications.

  • The provision of support and relief in other areas of Council functions.
  • Maintain accurate timesheets, plant log sheets and other records, including

WHS documents or electronic data, as required.

  • Other duties within the scope of the position and as directed by the Coordinator Construction

or Maintenance, or the delegated authority.

that can impair their ability to carry out the role in a safe manner. There is a zero tolerance for

any illicit/illegal drugs and alcohol whilst engaged by Council in this role.

  • Report all accidents, incidents or injuries which occur in the course of work.
  • Attend and participate in Work Health and Safety programs, as instructed.
  • Support and take part in any consultative activities aimed at assisting Work Health and Safety

issues.
