Hatch, a full-service consultancy, is currently seeking a highly motivated Rail Operations Modelling and Simulation Specialist to join the Transit, Operations Modeling and Simulation team in either Montreal, QC, Toronto, ON or Vancouver, BC .
Rail Operations Modelling and Simulation lies at the junction of Rail Systems, Vehicles and Operations practices, and exposes the candidate to all functional aspects of rail infrastructure and operation. Using analysis and modelling tools, including simulation, our team supports our clients’ initiatives to create better operating plans and optimize infrastructure and rolling stock fleets. Team members use their analytical skills to develop and optimize timetables, propose and justify infrastructure enhancements, demonstrate the economic benefits associated with electrification and advanced train control systems.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Be responsible for building, amending, and simulating railway network simulation models using industry and best practice standards.
  • Lead a variety of rail network analyses, studies, simulation model development or optimization, and technical report generation addressing a wide range of operating, infrastructure and performance improvement.
  • Lead operational analysis to support the decision-making of railway engineering components including trackwork, signaling, rolling stock, timetabling, stabling, etc.
  • Validate system requirements through operational analysis and rail network planning.
  • Participate with senior leaders in the establishment of short- and long-term plans.
  • As appropriate, support the development of more junior staff within the team.

You bring to the role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Systems Engineering; specialization in Transportation Planning, Railway Engineering or similar field is preferred.
  • 5 - 8 years’ experience in transit planning, rail operations analysis, railway timetabling, and/or rail network simulation.
  • Proficiency with programming languages and the ability to analyze and visualize large dataset (spreadsheet, xml, csv) are preferred.
  • Experience with rail network simulation software such as OpenTrack, RailSys, or Rail Traffic Controller (RTC) is preferred.
  • Experience with traffic and/or pedestrian micro-simulation in rail projects is desirable
  • Familiarity with train control system is desirable.
  • Experience with AutoCAD is desirable.
  • Must be a good team player with experience in a consulting engineering environment.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision.
  • Self-motivated and have a strong interest in rail operation.
