Description:

NATURE OF WORK

The principle and customary work of the employee in this employment class consists of in assisting the teaching personnel in the preparation, presentation, and supervision of laboratory work, field work and workshops.

QUALIFICATIONS

To have a diploma of college studies (DEC) in an appropriate specialty or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and test laboratory apparatus and instruments and prepares materials needed for student experiments and demonstrations as requested by faculty;
  • Participate in choosing and improving laboratory procedures and experimental techniques;
  • Participate in the choice of apparatus and instruments in coordination with the department;
  • Perform the duties of demonstrator, monitor, and laboratory supervisor, as required to share relevant knowledge, techniques, procedures and the correct use and handling of equipment etc.;
  • Monitor laboratory chemical and biological waste and disposal in accordance with Health and Safety Regulations;
  • Organize and maintains plants, animals, and/or cultures or appropriate use in the laboratory;
  • Make necessary media for various cultures;
  • Prepare purchase orders for the replacement of materials and supplies;
  • Help prepare annual departmental capital budget submissions;
  • Lend out equipment to students during lab periods or for special projects;
  • Keep computer file inventory of lab supplies, equipment, AV supplies, manuals, etc.;
  • Responsible for the calibration, maintenance and repair of instrumentation, apparatus and tools and places service calls where necessary;
  • Maintains all facilities, resource areas, storage rooms and laboratories clean, orderly and secure;
  • Provide support for Continuing Education course as appropriate;
  • Perform any other related tasks.
