Description:

Nature of work:
The principal and customary work of the employee in this employment class consists in assisting the teaching and technical personnel and students by preparing and placing at their disposal the material needed for carrying out experiments and activities related to subjects taught, to sociocultural and sports activities, and to audio-visual productions.
The role will primarily reside in the Biomedical Laboratory Technology Department and, secondly, in the Biology Department. The workplace of this employee involves potential chemical, physical, and biological hazards (includes serum and blood).

Responsibilities:

  • Recognize the importance of confidentiality and ethical behaviors related to the medical profession.
  • Apply universal precaution and safety protocols for general medical and biology laboratories when using and disposing of bio-hazardous products.
  • Sterilize laboratory material, garbage, media, and equipment (as per appropriate characteristics and needs).
  • Prepare and distribute fresh hypochlorite disinfectant solution. Maintain and clean glassware inventory (includes collecting, labeling, washing, rinsing, drying, verifying cleanliness, re-shelving, capping tubes, and maintaining the soaking solution in the pipet buckets).
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all laboratories and preparation rooms, including around specialized equipment.
  • Restock the consumable laboratory supplies.
  • Prepare tubes for student media making (e.g., sterilize, melt contents, empty, soak and wash with brush, then machine wash previously used tubes).
  • Assist technicians in the setting up and dismantling of labs, whenever possible.
  • Perform basic autoclave maintenance (change ink cartridge, change paper roll, respond to and follow up on error codes).
  • Schedule preventive maintenance visits.
  • Perform other related tasks.

Length of the contract : April 2024 to July 2024*
Requirements :
Qualifications:
Have a secondary school diploma (DES) or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.

Conditions:

  • Knowledge of universal lab safety protocol, especially with handling blood, bodily fluids and needles (testing may be required)
  • Basic knowledge of WHMIS 2015
  • Intermediate oral and written English communication skills (testing may be required)
  • Basic oral French communication skills (testing may be required)
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel (testing may be required)
  • Knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical science or biology an asset
  • Knowledge of using an autoclave to sterilize biomedical waste is an asset
  • Knowledge of using a laboratory glassware washer an asset
  • Excellent organization skills, and ability to exercise judgment and take initiative when necessary
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of team, and to work independently when needed
