JOB SUMMARY

**Location: On-site, National Gallery of Canada, 380, Sussex Drive, Ottawa
Under the supervision of the Director of Communications, the Social Media Officer is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating an active and compelling social presence for the National Gallery of Canada, its exhibitions and its programs.
The Social Media Officer creates bilingual content for, and maintains day-to-day activity across all our social media channels. In collaboration with the Gallery’s Visitor Experience team, the successful candidate will monitor, engage with and grow online communities interested and/or curious about the visual arts. The role of the Social Media Officer will support our five-year strategic plan and contribute to overall Communications and Marketing objectives and activities (including influencer relations). The Social Media Officer has strong content production skills to support our goal to promote the benefits of visiting the/and engaging with the Gallery amongst national and international digital audiences.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary education in a field relevant to the duties of the position such as communications, journalism, marketing, museum studies or digital technologies or an equivalent combination of education and significant amount of relevant experience.

Working experience

  • 3-5 years’ experience with social media platforms and their respective participants (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X, LinkedIn), notably planning, creating and sharing content and leading community engagement;
  • 2-3 years’ experience using social media management tools (scheduling, monitoring, engaging and analyzing), such as Sprout Social;
  • 3-5 years’ experience working knowledge and production skills with rich digital content such as videos, GIFs, infographics, Instagram Stories, podcasting and live streaming (ex. Instagram Live);
  • 3-5 years’ working experience of Microsoft Office Suite, social media analytics on various platforms ;
  • 2-3 years’ experience in Public Relations, Marketing or Community Management;
  • 2-3 years’ experience with video and image editing (ex. Photoshop);
  • 2-3 years’ experience blogging about the visual arts, museums and the cultural sector is an asset;
  • 2-3 years’ experience in administrative, procurement, budgeting and copyright coordination are all assets;

Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced reading, writing and communicating skills in both official languages (English and French);
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills;
  • Ability to comfortably navigate social media platforms from a desktop computer and a number of mobile devices (i.e. iPhone, Android, Tablets, etc.) to engage target audiences;
  • Ability to use photo and video editing applications in order to quickly upload content to a number of social media platforms;
  • Ability to think strategically to create proactive monthly social editorial calendars that help achieve institutional objectives;
  • Ability to write concise, accurate and compelling copy for a variety of audiences on a range of social media platforms in both official languages (English and French);
  • Ability to interpret analytical data and create comprehensive analytic reports;
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of current social media landscape, trends, tools;
  • Self-starter with some project management skills, including schedule development, tracking, task prioritization and an ability to meet tight deadlines;
  • Ability to negotiate the requests and needs of different internal stakeholders while firmly advocating for the Gallery’s audiences;
  • Ability to navigate, with the support of your Communications colleagues, unpredictable situations like comments and questions from the public and queries from Parliament;
  • Ability to keep track of many small details without losing sight of the big picture;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian visual art, including our permanent collection, in order to develop innovative ways of sharing information and achieving public interaction with it.
