About the role
This role is part Austal’s Technology Development team whose purpose is to enable Austal to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage through the identification, development, and deployment of new technology into its operation technology (OT) business.
Austal is developing a ship visualisation platform created in the Unity Engine to deliver a next generation user interface. Austal requires an experienced software developer to be part of this effort.
A secondary area of focus will be on furthering the development of all the Austal family of software products. This role is also expected to act as a subject matter expert in support of other Austal functions including Sales, Warranty, In Service Support and Design & Engineering.
Key objectives & responsibilities include:

Software system development:

  • Define and develop in appropriate language and tools the front-end user interface and back-end systems functionality required according to directions set by the Project/Product Manager.
  • Work to team’s agreed DevOps processes for code development, testing and deployment.
  • Maintain awareness of state of the art in relevant software tools and languages.

Planning and reporting:

  • Assist in defining project plans and system design.
  • Continually review all aspects of the scope as it develops providing technical / experience-based feedback for consideration.
  • Provide regular verbal and other updates as required on work progress to the Project / Product manager.
  • Demonstrate, coach/train where required to other team members functionality of the tools used and systems developed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and performance of the role itself and the team more broadly, including wherever possible automation of repetitive tasks.

Required Skills / Experience / Attributes:

  • Tertiary or technical qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or similar.
  • Proven experience with Unity Real-Time Development Platform.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Proven understanding of user interface development and functionality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a small team, not necessarily collocated.
  • Development experience in the following: Unity Engine, Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code.
  • High level of Competency in C#.
  • Demonstrated experience with DevOps Tools such as Git, Jira, ect.
