The Opportunity
The South Bow Safety team is seeking a Safety Specialist (Projects) to join the team, based in Calgary, AB or Houston, TX.
Reporting to the Manager of Occupational Health & Safety, this position will focus on contractor’s safety management systems, programs, processes, and safe work practices to verify compliance and alignment with South Bow’s Management System while providing Health & Safety support and expertise to enable our business to manage risk and protect the wellbeing of our people.

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to continually enhance and execute on our safety vision, strategy, and tactics
  • Interpret and provide guidance on occupational health and safety regulations, internal specifications and standards, and best practices
  • Identify high energy hazards, correct safety deficiencies upon discovery, and take action to reduce risk
  • Provide subject matter expertise to Project teams through all phases of project completion
  • Assess contractor safety programs, plans, and management systems against company requirements, and identify any gaps or deficiencies that need addressed.
  • Utilize the ISN contractor management platform to document evaluations and maintain qualification records
  • Develop tools and processes to thoroughly evaluate a contractor’s operational risk management system
  • Evaluate contractor safety performance, written programs, training, incident reporting and other key metrics through program document review, audits and inspections of contractor facilities, and field operations, including project sites
  • Document findings and work with contractors to develop bridging documents prior to approval
  • Verify contractor adherence to all applicable federal, state/provincial and local safety regulations
  • Regularly conduct field visits to project work sites to ensure safety plans are fit for purpose, maintained, and supported
  • Facilitate incident reviews with contractors and guide development of corrective actions
  • Identify any emerging gaps or deficiencies and drive corrective actions for continuous improvement
  • Conduct periodic re-assessments of approved contractors’ safety programs and performance
  • Leverage learnings to enhance Company’s contractor safety management processes
  • Maintain Incident Command System (ICS) qualifications to support incident response

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in health and safety, OH&S Certification or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 6 years of related H&S work experience in oil and gas pipeline operations or construction experience (e.g., upstream, midstream or downstream operations)
  • Proven understanding of occupational health, personal and process safety programs, operational management systems, corporate governance, and contractor management
  • Strong technical safety expertise (contractor safety management, safety plan development, hazard identification, incident investigations, emergency preparedness and response, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge legislative requirements governing health and safety at the federal, provincial, and state levels (i.e., OSHA, COHSR and other applicable Standards)
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in cross border Project execution in pipeline and/or facility construction within the Oil & Gas sector
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or equivalent safety certification
  • Technical acumen in Confined Space, Electrical Safety, Lock Out Tag Out, Hot Work, Elevated Work, Process Safety, Vehicle Safety, and related areas

This position requires candidates to:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment medical screening including drug and alcohol testing
  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and provide a driver’s abstract (record) for review
  • Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)
  • Travel to other company locations within the U.S. and Canada which would involve some overnight stays away from home
  • Provide emergency support as required
