This is a new permanent post for a Specialist Doctor in Gastroenterology to join the existing team at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
It is anticipated that this post will 10 programmed activities (PAs) each week. If suitable applicants are interested, posts may be filled on a part-time, flexible or job share basis.
The aim of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust Gastroenterology department is to deliver excellent clinical care in the field of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as team work, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.
The post holder will be able to work independently to provide general gastroenterology clinical care along with endoscopic services to patients at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and its outlying clinics/endoscopy hubs. There will be an opportunity to develop and deliver subspecialty services and any of these (IBD, nutrition, hepatology, HPB medicine, interventional endoscopy etc.) would be considered.
A minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous or aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including overseas will also be accepted.

Responsibilities:

Maintenance of the highest standards in the care of patients with Gastroenterology conditions
To share with colleagues responsibility for the day to day management of our Gastroenterology Department
To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).
Flexibility of duties i.e. assisting with emergency endoscopy.
Contribution to the out-of-hours endoscopy rota
The post holders will provide service work to maintain either endoscopy and/or clinic waits to comply with national and local targets
The post holders will support Consultants with the provision of inpatient care to patients on the Gastroenterology ward and other acute medical areas where required.
Where appropriate, to participate in the development of research within service
To facilitate teaching and training within the department
Participation and involvement in clinical governance, quality improvement and other business in the Gastroenterology and Endoscopy department
The job plan will largely be expected to include 7 clinical sessions per week. Although all doctors within the department work to the framework of a job plan, there is a longstanding culture that applies the spirit of the contract where colleagues’ cross-cover sessions in most areas to support leave or sickness and to help maintain the smooth working and efficiency of the department.
The team of Specialist Gastroenterologists is growing. As we recruit, the job plan will likely adapt to providing a month of ward care on a rotational basis with reduced clinics and endoscopy lists. This aims to improve continuity of care on the wards, optimise service provision, allow cross-cover for sickness, leave, study leave absences whilst continuing to support the personal and professional development of the team
