Job Description

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW AND DIFFERENT CAREER PATHWAY WHILE STILL MAINTAINING YOUR CLINICAL SKILLS AND PATIENT CARE?

If you are and would like to join a dynamic and caring team, delivering a varied research portfolio then keep reading. We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to join our successful Research and Innovation Department, working as a Specialist Research Nurse within the Cardiology Research Team. Due to significant growth in our trust wide studies the post holder will be expected to work across a diverse portfolio of studies delivering research in several cardiology sub-specialities including heart failure, arrhythmia and acute coronary syndromes. The post holder will be responsible for supporting the day to day running of high quality Commercial and National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) portfolio studies and will be expected to contribute to all aspects of trial delivery across the Trust.
Working with the other Specialist Research Nurses in the Cardiology Research Team, you will be responsible for delivering the diverse portfolio, providing high quality care from recruitment through to follow up, closeout and archive. The post holder will work in close collaboration with the Research nursing team, Principal Investigators, and support staff, to ensure compliance with Trust Policy, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Human Tissue Act (HTA), and trial specific protocols.

JOB SUMMARY

  • Work as part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team ensuring patient care is delivered smoothly and efficiently.
  • To work as part of a team to lead, manage and deliver Clinical Trials within Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • To be responsible for co-ordinating, delivering and maintaining a high standard of day-to-day clinical care for all patients.
  • To provide support to study research team, Senior Research Nurses, Research Nurse Leads, Clinical Research Leads, Deputy Director and ultimately the Trust Director of Research in delivering high quality clinical research, and to provide clinical leadership to the team.
  • To recruit patients into Clinical Trials designated as ‘portfolio’ studies by the NIHR Clinical Research Network and/or Commercially Sponsored Clinical Trials.
  • Support the Trust culture of collaborative, flexible cross-team working and commitment to delivering quality services and outcomes, which support the Government’s policies on public health.
  • The expectations within this job description will be achieved through hands-on clinical practice, education and training.

Responsibilities:

We are looking for a registered nurse with sound cardiology and/or research experience, excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, whilst possessing a keen eye for detail. Previous experience in delivering research trials would be advantageous but robust training will be provided to those who have no experience in this area. Leadership skills are essential to support both team and portfolio development, and there may be a requirement to undertake line management within this role so previous experience of managing or supervising junior staff is essential as is an ability to work independently and flexibly. The successful applicant will need to be enthusiastic and ready to work actively to support recruiting patients in line with NIHR targets. There may be times when you will be asked to support other areas to achieve these targets including off site such as community hospitals and the Portsmouth Research Hub.
The post holder will be supported by the Cardiology Research team, senior research nurses and our clinicians and Principal Investigators. This role is ideal for a highly motivated nurse who is keen to further develop their experience in clinical research nursing to help shape the future of health care. In return, you will be provided with opportunities to further develop your knowledge and skills in delivering research. The post holder will work in close collaboration with the Research department, Principal Investigators and research support staff, to ensure compliance with Trust Policy, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Human Tissue Act (HTA), and trial specific protocols.
An informal visit to the department is strongly encouraged. For an informal discussion or to arrange a department visit, please contact Serena Howe (serena.howe2@porthosp.nhs.uk) on 02392 286000 ext. 4270 or Pedro Braga Sardo (Pedro.BragaSardo@porthosp.nhs.uk) on 023 92286000 ext. 3295.
