Job Description:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Manager, Work Design & Compensation, the Specialist, Work Design and Compensation provides expert advice, guidance and education on a variety of complex classification, compensation, work design and labour relations issues to People staff including HR Client Services and Employee Records, Payroll, corporate partners and as required senior leaders of Island Health. Guides clients in making classification, compensation and labour relation decisions that are fair, appropriate, fiscally responsible and equitable.
The Specialist, Work Design and Compensation supports the work of other specialists and members of People by bringing the work design, classification & compensation lens to their area of specialty; researches, analyzes and develops options following human resources best practice, collective agreement and jurisprudence requirements.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a baccalaureate degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years direct compensation/classification experience preferably in a multi-union health care or public sector environment.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and resolve complex programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated tact, diplomacy and use of persuasive negotiating skills.
  • High-level communication skills including presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of collective agreements, pertinent legislation and jurisprudence theory and practice.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and with changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to use computer systems such as spreadsheets, Word, database software and Human Resource Information System (HRIS)
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
