Description:
Since 2005 Morrison Ward has specialized in the rehabilitation of mentally disordered offenders – admitting male patients from Broadmoor Hospital and safely rehabilitating them to either low security or the community.
The successful candidate will have to work closely with a supportive and friendly MDT and assist the consultant in liaising with Broadmoor high security hospital, the Ministry of Justice. Most of the patients are detained under Part 3 of the Mental Health Act 1983.
The post-holder will work at the level of a Specialty Doctor, working on Morrison Ward, alongside Dr Dunn. The ward is within the John Howard Centre.
This post offers the opportunity to gain invaluable experience for those considering a career in forensic psychiatry. The postholder will be able to observe a wide range of clinical practice in a supported and well supervised environment, working with skilled and experienced clinicians. There will be specialist training available to the successful applicant, for example in using the HCR-20, facilitating groups and in conducting specialist assessments.
Our mission is to make a positive difference to people’s lives by improving the quality of life for all we serve. Our values are: We Care, We Respect, We are Inclusive – so we are looking for people who live and breathe these qualities when supporting service users and carers, and in their relationships with colleagues in the Trust and our partner organisations
The successful candidate will provide medical input into the ward.
The duties will include day-to-day management of inpatients, including mental state examinations, physical health reviews and reviews of medications; reviews of enhanced observations; admission assessments, reports and discharge summaries. On occasion, there will be the opportunity to liaise with prisons and courts. Attendance at ward rounds and CPA review meetings is expected. There will be the opportunity to gain experience in the preparation of reports for the Courts, Mental Health Review Tribunals, Manager’s Hearings and others as required. There will also be the opportunity to participate in the treatment programmes and attend unit wide activities such as academic activity, supervision, community meetings and unit events.
Morrison Ward is fully staffed with a multi-disciplinary team including a modern matron, clinical nurse manager, nursing team, psychologist, OT, social worker and along with admin support.
On-call duties are not expected but you will be expected to participate in an internal cover rota which operates between Monday and Friday during working hours. Your commitment will not typically exceed the equivalent of a half day a week. In this role, you will provide cover to the John Howard Centre.
The post holder will be expected to support the Trust’s Clinical Governance Framework for monitoring and improving standards of care through taking part in activities for improving quality, identifying and managing risks within the service, as well as maintaining his or her own continuing professional development.
He or she will have regular supervision with the Consultant Psychiatrist, and will comply with the statutory requirements for annual appraisal, drawing up personal development plans and revalidation as set out by the General Medical Council and the Trust.
Working with forensic patients can be challenging, as well as interesting. Each ward has a reflective practice session at least once a month.
There is a network of junior medical staff at the John Howard Centre, with seven CT doctors, three ST doctors and two other speciality doctors, which gives the opportunity for informal peer support.
