Description:
This is a part time post comprising up to 2 days/4 sessions per week plus on-call duties. It is a replacement post to cover a vacancy. This post will be suitable for a doctor with experience in general medicine, and will provide opportunity to develop palliative medicine skills, encompassing symptom management, communication skills, psycho-social and spiritual awareness, ethical issues and loss, grief and bereavement. Palliative care in Plymouth Specialist palliative care in Plymouth is a fully integrated service that provides care across hospital, community and hospice settings.
Although this post will be based at The Inpatient unit at Turnchapel, the post holder will be part of a team delivering specialist palliative care, in conjunction with the wider multi-professional team, to a population of about 450,000. St Lukes Hospice has 12 specialist beds for patients with complex needs, and is a stand-alone facility situated in the south east of Plymouth about half an hour from Derriford Hospital. The hospice admits patients for symptom control and terminal care. There are about 250 admissions per year, 90% of which currently are cancer patients, with an average length of stay of about 13 days.
There is a Pain Clinic once a week at the hospice, run jointly with a Consultant in Pain Management from Derriford Hospital. The lead consultant for the palliative care team is Dr Doug Hooper, based at Derriford Hospital. The St Lukes Hospital Palliative Care Team receives about 1000 new inpatient referrals per year. Referrals to palliative care are made from many specialties, although currently about 75% of referrals are for cancer patients, and the team sits within the Oncology Directorate.
The team provides a seven-day service from 9am 5pm. The St Lukes Community Specialist Palliative Care Team provides specialist palliative care to people in their own homes, nursing homes and community hospitals.
