The Senior Director of R&D Technology Development is the pivotal leader responsible for guiding and advancing our global technology innovation initiatives for our growth engine brands like Arm & Hammer, Oxiclean, Batiste, Trojan, Therabreath and more. These contribute more than $ 4.5 Billion of company sales. This role demands a visionary leader that will create and lead new strategies where none currently exist, plus a proven track record in technical innovation. Capable of steering our company through complex, high-impact & consumer-winning technology innovation projects, accelerating our company’s growth trajectory, leveraging cutting-edge innovations to solidify our market leadership and drive sustainable, long-term growth.

Below are some of the specifics for the role:

  • Architects, creates and champions comprehensive global technology strategies for all principal categories/growth brands, ensuring they are intricately woven with our Strategic Business Unit (SBU) strategies, innovation areas, and deeply integrated with our consumer experience programs. This role is instrumental in creating and guaranteeing strategic alignment and successful delivery in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Able to lead the integration of all C&D technology programs across our :”Lead” growth innovation brands (currently, these are divided into two Director-departments). Demonstrates an exceptional track record of scientific achievement and visionary leadership. This includes pioneering new technologies, scientific and technical concepts, or principles that synergize with consumer needs and corporate innovation landscapes, and they are embodied in demonstrated consumer-winning products. These endeavors have impacted and will impact substantially the company goals, driving our lead categories growth.
  • Leads critical technology development initiatives globally, collaborating with international internal and external partners. These efforts are pivotal in driving most of the new growth and innovation within the corporation, affirming our commitment to achieving a goal of 2.5% increase in INS corporate growth. Additionally, these initiatives play a significant role in the global transformational GMS initiatives, marking a new era of international growth and expansion.
  • Directly leads multiple teams and 3 executive leader team (with more than 10 highly skilled scientists, located in US and internationally) and continuously lead through influence across R&D technical and business global cross-functional communities. Active coaching, mentoring, and managing senior and junior engineers for personal, professional, and technical development.
  • Seamlessly integrates with GNPI and Product Development (PD) innovation strategies. This integration is fundamental in propelling the development of the Transformational Consumer Experience (TCE) pipeline, setting new benchmarks in innovation and market relevance.
  • Leads the global technology project portfolio (the “funnel” portfolio) encompassing complex, multidiscipline lead-categories development projects from initiation through Proof-of-Principle (POP) and feasibility. This portfolio populates the new product development transformational pipeline.
  • Provides technical leadership and expertise on innovative new opportunities. Drives a robust development process; identifies emerging trends and applies innovative technologies, process’ and tools to improve project outcomes.
  • Influences and works closely with the various internal global R&D groups, with GNPI, marketing research, legal and business development, etc. teams. The ability to influence, work closely and manage external-to-C&D partners is highly required using the principles of open innovation.
  • Requires excellent communication skills, leadership capabilities, business acumen, and the ability to work closely with cross functional partners to deliver global initiatives. Requires communication of technology and innovation development to the executive corporate leadership team.
  • Responsible for resource allocation, budget tracking across multiple cost centers, process improvements and project execution
  • Developing and executing department’s global 5 year strategy that is aligned with key stakeholders and partners.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

This role demands a visionary leader with a proven track record in scientific innovation and strategic leadership, capable of steering our company through complex, high-impact technology development projects.

  • Assists R&D and corporate leadership in establishing technical strategies/scientific policies.
  • Manages projects internally and at outside research facilities or independent contract laboratories.
  • Identifies and evaluates upstream technologies for potential implementation into existing products or new products.
  • Leads/assists in the technical due diligence of new technologies and M&A opportunities.
  • Spearheads technology scouting and IP landscaping activities.
  • Be an internal champion for open innovation, integrated design thinking, advanced consumer research, etc.
  • Prepares reports and makes technical presentations to communicate key findings to technical, marketing, legal and regulatory personnel.
  • Serves as the primary contact with outside organizations for technology development.
  • Develops capital/expense budget for externally managed projects.
  • Guides, coaches and reviews subordinates.
  • Key Relationships include but are not limited to the following:

Education and Experience
The individual will be a highly seasoned professional with a minimum of eight years of experience in consumer products and technology innovation, development and execution.
An advanced (MS or Ph. D) degree from an accredited institution in chemical, biochemical, or engineering sciences or related discipline with greater than 15 years of experience in a related technical field is highly desired.
