What to Expect
Tesla’s Manufacturing Engineering team is at the forefront of developing first-of-a-kind processes which allow us to produce amazing vehicles at best-in-class quality and rate; in a safe and ergonomic environment. The Coatings group is seeking a Sr Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design and development of novel coating processes used in the manufacture of our products, which includes specification and validation, establishing and optimization of critical process parameters, design for manufacturing, equipment specification and design, as well as installation and commissioning. The candidate will work closely with internal cross-functional teams, external vendors and technology partners on process development from concept to production.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration and build relationships across the organization through coordination with other process, equipment, mechanical, electrical and support disciplines including project managers, manufacturing reps, and other stakeholders.
  • Analyze to understand the cost of a process per unit of production and drive the development for process which will yield the greatest benefit.
  • Lead product design for manufacturability (DFM) and sustainability, including analysis of product design and identification of potential risks to the process and steering product design to the lowest overall cost (BOM cost + manufacturing cost).
  • Document product requirements for process and equipment specification
  • Develop advanced processing technologies and equipment from concept to serial production.
  • Detailed line design based on process requirements, throughput and OEE calculations.
  • Lead process qualification, including development of acceptance testing criteria and verifying process/equipment meets requirements using statistical tools (such as GR&R, SPC and Cp/Cpk)
  • Manage large-scale projects for new programs, including the development of timing plans and cost breakdowns for executive approval, identification of risks to project timing driving corrective action, reporting of project status to executive team, and oversight of installation and commissioning of new manufacturing lines

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s in engineering (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mechatronics or Chemical preferred), 5 years related experience in a technology-based industry, where automated methods are utilized in the finishing/coating of consumer products, or equivalent
  • Experience working with or developing novel processes with little to no industry precedence.
  • Experience with developing, installing, and commissioning high-volume process equipment & automation systems, including coil coating/lamination, in-mold lamination/decoration, conveyors, robotics, pre-treatment and e-coat equipment, paint/powder application equipment, booths and ovens
  • Experience in developing, executing and interpreting results of Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Experience using Industrial Engineering methods working in high-volume manufacturing processes.
  • Proficient in using Catia, SolidWorks, Inventor, and/or AutoCAD & automation software
  • Proficient in the development and deployment of PFMEAs, new product introduction and manufacturing operations experience desired
  • Mastery of MS Office suite, Confluence, Jira etc
  • Travel required ~ 25%

Expected Compensation
$80,000 - $258,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
