The Pre/Post Operation Unit at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is hiring a full-time nurse to support our department. We are a dynamic team of nurses who provide top-notch care to our patients before and after surgery. In this role, you will support the Pre/Post Op unit by preparing and recovering patients form surgery. This is a great opportunity for someone with prior critical care experience and a passion for providing amazing patient care.
At UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital, the Pre/Post department serves our surgical patients before and after the Operating Room. We have a call center where patients are assessed and given their times for surgery. The Preop unit gets the patient ready for surgery on the day of, and the PACU recovers patients after surgery. We do both inpatient and outpatient surgeries, when patients are recovered, they go to the inpatient unit or to our discharge area where our staff does discharge teaching and prepares them to go home.
We have a 1:4 nursing ratio in Preop and phase 2. We have a 1:2 ratio in the PACU. We average about 60 surgeries per day.
Our department is desirable because of the flexible M-F daytime schedule. There are minimal evening and weekend call requirements. We also offer variability in shifts and variety in types of patients throughout the different phases based on what your preferences are.
Our opportunities are regular full-time positions and offer a generous benefits package and a competitive salary. The schedule is generally Monday through Friday, daylight hours. Our unit typically works 4, 9hr shifts. There is a rotating call requirement for evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively participates in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts. Identifies opportunity for quality improvement to colleagues and management. Takes personal responsibility in improving patient satisfaction with the quality of care and service. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care: identifies research issues or articles related to clinical specialty or areas of interest, discusses opportunities for quality improvement at multidisciplinary rounds, and influences patients’ plans of care.
  • Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patients that involves the patient as partner and considers the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner. Demonstrates critical thinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care. Practices solid communication skills, and is able to articulate and translate the patient’s condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers. Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system’s goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction. Creates a caring and compassionate patient focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families and colleagues.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues. Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthy relationships. Maintains a conscious balance between work and personal life.   • Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles (and/or teaching children if applicable) and applies in teaching of patients, families, students and new staff. Provides detailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families to effectively guide them through the episode of care as well as transition to another level of care and/or home. Supports the development of students, new staff and colleagues, may serve as a preceptor.
  • 2 years’ experience strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred, but not required.
  • Previous Critical Care, ICU, ER, PACU, Procedural, or Med Surg/Step down experience is preferred.
