LOCATION/DIVISION SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Thermo Fisher Scientific – Pleasanton, CA is a rapidly growing, dynamic DNA/RNA Oligo manufacturing site that is seeking sharp individuals to bring the highest quality processes, products, and testing to our clients. This role is based onsite in the Pleasanton, CA area with 20% travel to other locations as/if needed.
How will you make an impact?
The Sr Staff Digital Automation Engineer is a global role within the Automation Engineering team and is responsible for providing advanced level expertise to site digital projects including feasibility studies, new systems implementations, process improvement projects, etc. They may serve as the overall project lead or project technical lead.
The Sr Staff Engineer will provide technical leadership, guidance, and support to the operations teams at the Pleasanton site as well as other sites within the Genetic Science Division as needed and will partner with the various functions to develop technical roadmaps and capital investment strategies.
The Sr Staff Engineer is expected to have strong knowledge in the various systems within ISA95 framework and ability to define integration requirements and specifications of each system solution, such as how data is aggregated from factory floor into Control layer, MES, ERP, Quality systems, etc. additionally, the successful candidate will play a key role in defining the future state of the digital factory and identify key investments needed to achieve this future state through close collaboration with site, divisional, and corporate partners.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field, with evidence of strong technical knowledge and professional experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience in engineering, operations, or process development in the life sciences industry
  • Hands on experience with end-to-end digital systems within a manufacturing operations facility
  • Experience with project management
  • Experience with digital, automation, and business systems including but not limited to MES, EBR, IOT, ERP, CMMS, LIMS, etc
  • Experience with large/small scale Oligo synthesis, purification, and analysis preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • In depth understanding of general regulated industry standards and practices
  • Candidate must have the capability to define and set technical direction for digital & automation systems
  • Candidate must also have the capability to define user requirements in support of designing or procuring components of layer 1 through 3 of the ISA95 model.
  • Knowledge in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++
  • Preferred Web development experience
  • Solid understanding of database (Oracle/PostgresSQL/SQL/InfluxDB/Flyway for data migration)
  • Familiarity with Industry 4.0 concepts, IoT, and data analytics for manufacturing.
  • Strong user documentation review and revision experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills; written and oral
  • Working with both hands-on and remote based staff

Responsibilities:

Digital Automation Integration:

  • Design, develop, and implement digital automation solutions to enhance efficiency and standardize Manufacturing processes.
  • Integrate and optimize various automation technologies, such as standalone equipment, and robotic systems, not limited to Quality system digitization, work stream digitization to achieve seamless factory automation.

    • Work closely with multi-functional teams, including manufacturing, IT, and engineering, to understand process requirements and implement standardized automation solutions.
  • Collaborate with equipment vendors to integrate their systems into a unified, digitally automated manufacturing environment.


    • Solid understanding such as Python, Java, or C++ (Control system software) to ensure current and future state digital systems adhere to requirements and meet all design criteria.

    • Knowledge and understanding of AI / Machine learning.
    • Experience with MES integration with instrumentation, IoT and Data Analytics
