Staff Attorney, Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic

The Clinical Law Program at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law seeks a Staff Attorney (payroll title – Research Assistant) to grow the program’s existing Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) Clinic. The Staff Attorney position offers a unique opportunity to expand the Clinical Law Program’s interdisciplinary partnerships with healthcare providers, social workers, and community partners to address the health-harming legal needs of vulnerable clients in the Baltimore City area.
The MLP Clinic collaborates with social workers and healthcare providers to address barriers to patient health and well-being in collaboration with social workers and health care providers. The MLP Clinic has long partnered primarily with the THRIVE Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus to improve legal outcomes and overall health and wellness for low-income patients who would otherwise lack access to legal services. The MLP Clinic provides direct client representation to provide financial, family, personal and other forms of stability to support people living with disabilities. The Staff Attorney will work within the MLP Clinic to represent clients; explore expanding the Clinic’s work to include new community, healthcare, and social work partners, including the infrastructure to formalize our MLP model; and may include assisting clinic faculty in the supervision of law students representing clients.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Experience in one or more of the areas of law practiced in the MLP Clinic: public benefits (particularly Social Security Disability/SSI benefits), advance care planning, custody, legal name change, employment or other discrimination, and/or guardianship.
• Excellent public speaking and writing skills.
• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and attention to detail.
• Ability to network and support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
• Interest in public interest law and/or social justice, service to vulnerable clients, and/or supervising and mentoring law students.
• Commitment to interdisciplinary work and collaborating with professionals from other fields as well as ability to work with a wide range of people, including social workers, healthcare providers, clients with low incomes, community organizations, and law students.
• Strong client-centered lawyering skills and excellent judgment, including sensitivity to client needs.
• Ability to travel between local clinical and community partner sites.
• Willingness to develop legal expertise as needed.
• Experience in a medical-legal partnership, knowledge of the Baltimore City legal services landscape, experience training providers or partners, grant writing and/or project management/development experience is a plus.
  Salary: $77,000-$83,000 depending on experience. This is a full-time, 18-month appointment with the possibility for extension subject to staff attorney performance and continued funding.
