Description:
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Laboratory of Biochemistry and Genetics of the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is seeking an experienced scientist to conduct basic research in RNA biology using biochemical and computational methods. The candidate must have demonstrated experience in yeast culture and genetics, preparation of Illumina sequencing libraries, and Python and R computer languages for analysis of Illumina sequencing data.
Specific responsibilities for the Staff Scientist include: • Conduct an independent project on the mechanism of mRNA translation regulation in the yeast model system and work as a team member within the Section on mRNA Regulation and Translation, Laboratory of Biochemistry and Genetics as well as collaborate with other investigators more broadly at the NIH. • Mentor trainees to help them develop core skills, including those in RNA biology and computational analysis of ribosome profiling datasets.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field. The ideal candidate must have experience with RNA purification, 40S ribosomal subunit profiling, sucrose gradient sedimentation, cryo milling, luminescence-based western and northern blotting methods, and preparation of and computational analysis of 40S ribosome profiling libraries. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated ability to independently work with yeast in the lab, carry out complex biochemical protocols involving RNA, and write computer code in R and Python programming languages. The position requires good interpersonal skills to facilitate productive professional interactions with staff and trainees within the NIDDK community as well as good writing and organizational skills.
