Job Description and Duties
The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Manager, Chief, Chronic Disease Surveillance and Research Branch (CDSRB). The Staff Services Manager III (SSM III) serves as assistant branch chief for CDSRB which includes four programs, all of which have statewide impacts, require administrative skills and knowledge at the highest level, with responsibility for work of the most critical and sensitive nature as related to the Department’s primary mission. The SSM III partners with program area technical leads for resource acquisition and management for these programs including identifying and securing funding, management/execution of fiscal, grants/contracts, and personnel for the Branch; oversight and coordination of legislative requests; development and implementation of public facing branch information; coordination of media requests related to CDSRB programs; approval and distribution of patient record requests. Within the scope noted above, the SSM III manages multiple complex cross-branch projects, provides leadership and direction to CDSRB staff, and communicates effectively to upper management on recommendations to resolve issues.

The Chronic Disease Surveillance and Research Branch (CDSRB) is committed to serving the public by collecting statewide data about cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and chronic disease risk factors; making chronic disease surveillance data available to public health practitioners and qualified researchers; conducting chronic disease surveillance; and communicating surveillance results to the public. In addition, the Branch provides leadership for, and coordination of, California’s statewide comprehensive cancer control efforts based on the concept that people and organizations working together to identify problems and develop solutions will lead to better use of limited resources and generation of new resources through new partnerships. CDSRB implements these activities by directing, managing, and monitoring the state-mandated Ken Maddy California Cancer Registry (CCR), California’s Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (CCCP), the Richard Paul Hemann California Parkinson’s Disease Registry (CPDR), the California Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (CBRFSS), and the California Neurodegenerative Disease Registry (CNDR) .
