About the role
The Strategic Growth Manager (Trading & Shipping) is responsible for supporting the strategy development and execution and international growth for the Trading & Shipping business in lockstep with the Ampol Group strategy and growth ambitions.
The role is tasked with supporting the development and execution of medium to long term strategy and growth plans including strategic partnerships, new trading geographies, financing structure and solutions and potential inorganic expansion (in collaboration with the Head of Strategic Growth & Business Development, Group Strategy and Corporate Development team and Business Unit executive general management).
Strategic and growth-related initiatives for Trading & Shipping will be focused on growing and optimising supply, developing strategic partnerships, monitoring inorganic expansion and evolving the business as energy markets transition. Coordination and collaboration will also be required with the Ampol Group to support the evaluation, execution and implementation of Group owned strategic and growth-related activities as they relate to the Trading & Shipping business.
The role requires close collaboration with several teams across Trading & Shipping including the Trading, Transformation and Governance teams. Other key stakeholders include corporate functions that enable efficient planning, development and implementation of strategic and growth initiatives.
Key responsibilities

Critical accountabilities

  • Support the alignment of the Trading & Shipping medium to long term strategy with the Ampol Group strategy.
  • Development and execution of the Trading & Shipping and International growth strategy including delivery of financial targets.
  • Ensure execution is based on clear prioritisation of initiatives and appropriately manages risks.
  • Support the translation of actionable goals for performance and growth and contribute to the annual business planning process.
  • Build and maintain a pipeline of strategic partnership and/or M&A opportunities by screening identified markets, counterparties and assets that are aligned with the T&S strategy. Develop and maintain a deep base knowledge of these markets, counterparties and assets.
  • Work with the Head of Strategic Growth & Business Development to develop and prepare business cases in relation to potential opportunities.
  • Perform financial and commercial analysis in relation to potential opportunities (technologies / products, markets or assets) including – business drivers, risks, synergies with the Ampol Group Strategy, performance benchmarking and valuation.
  • Manage execution workstreams in relation to strategic growth opportunities (eg. due diligence, Q&A, financing, internal approvals) and support negotiation of transaction documentation.
  • Engage effectively with internal and external counterparties to manage needs, expectations and attain or communicate relevant information.
  • Support regular reporting of performance and progress to the Managing Director – Trading & Shipping and Executive General Manager – International & New Business and other senior stakeholders.
  • Partner with the Group Strategy & Corporate Development Team to ensure sharing of insights and translation into actionable opportunities for the Ampol Group.

Operational Excellence

  • Translate strategic into actionable goals for performance and growth helping to implement goal setting, performance management and annual business planning.
  • Execution of strategic growth initiatives and project management.

Corporate Enablement & Stewardship

  • Participate in expansion activities - investments, acquisitions, corporate alliances, etc.
  • Adhere to company, country, and local business requirements, enforcing compliance and acting when necessary.

Technology

  • Leverage technologies and partner with relevant IT and technology teams to enable strategy execution.
  • Plus, such duties as may be reasonably required by the company from time to time

Qualifications & experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics or Engineering or related discipline or relevant operational experience.
  • You will have several years post qualification and proven track record in strategic growth in a large, listed, or complex Oil & Gas/Resource/Commodity based organisations.
  • Minimum of 7 years of commercial experience in the oil industry and/or petroleum trading companies in areas such as trading, supply planning, supply operations, line finance roles, commercial analysis, risk management, corporate planning, business development and strategy. Experience in investment banking or private equity will be beneficial but not necessary.
  • Proven track record in delivering significant business outcomes through the development and adoption of identified business strategies and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated success in business partnering roles, developing, and influencing business strategy and implementation; proven success in partnering with executives, operational leaders and corporate.
  • Exposure to non-financial operational drivers in Oil & Gas/Resource/Commodity based business.
  • Experience working in a variety of Group structures and business models as well as new market entries.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strategic and business acumen including planning and execution processes.
  • Ability to establish effective strategic partnerships and relationships across the Ampol Group and with key industry and government entities in a broad range of geographies.
  • Strong financial analysis, corporate finance and valuation skills.
  • Strong project management capability, including experience in overseeing due diligence workstreams.
  • Understanding of compliance regulations in the fields of Competition and Consumer Act (Australia) and Consumer Protection Act (Singapore) and other relevant regulations.
  • Commercial skills that bring a strong data analysis focus and you can look at performance metrics, key profit and cash flow drivers and balance this with the economic hurdles.
  • Understanding of the Petroleum Supply Chain process including key drivers of value, in particular integration from supplier to customer.
  • Understanding of the financial components of oil and gas trading.
