JOB SUMMARY

We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible and resilient candidate to join DCMS’s Strategy & Policy Unit. The post holder will be given the unique opportunity to work at the centre of the department on a variety of cross-cutting strategic and policy issues. This is a particularly exciting time to join the team and be at the heart of the Department’s strategic approach at a pivotal point.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Working as part of Strategy and Policy Unit, you will work closely with stakeholders and teams across the department; including ministers, the Permanent Secretary’s office, the Directors General and the rest of the DCMS Executive Board. The team is leading a futures-focused programme to support project teams from across the Department to develop long-term policy thinking in response to some of the knottiest strategic challenges the Department will face up to 2030 and beyond, for example, economic growth and environmental sustainability.

The post holder will be proactive, have strong relationship building and communication skills; and thrive on creativity and problem solving. In this role you can expect to be involved in:

  • Working closely with policy teams to support and advise them to develop, test and challenge policy thinking fit for future trends, risks and opportunities;
  • Strengthening the approach to strategy across the department through supporting the design and delivery of a cross-Department capability building programme, including leading workshops to unpick the Department’s highest priority strategic questions and developing futures tools;
  • Leading and analysing complex cross-cutting strategic policy priorities;
  • Working with Other Government Departments and the Department’s analysis function to draw together futures intelligence and tools to inform future policy thinking;
  • Leading engagement on short-term cross-cutting policy issues that impact the department, its sectors and its stakeholders;

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong organisational skills and experience of working in a cross-cutting role and/or on a variety of projects with clear, demonstrable outputs and outcomes;
  • A critical and creative thinker able to come up with solutions to complex problems. Ability to think strategically and see the bigger picture;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Proactive and able to work with autonomy;
  • Relationship building skills and experience of / aptitude for working with senior stakeholders and influencing and negotiating with others.
  • Experience or aptitude of capability building or leadership & development programmes or expertise in futures, red-teaming and/or strategy disciplines and tools.

DESIRABLE SKILLS:

  • Prior experience working in a strategy or policy focused role.
