ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced individual with a streets design and case-making background for our UK-based team (London, Manchester or Leeds). This opportunity offers the right candidate the opportunity to grow their career and to have a positive impact on how our urban streets are defined and prioritised for the future.

The team undertakes a portfolio of high-profile studies that focus on urban streets within a particular area or corridor, and aim to develop solutions that enable healthier and more efficient movement whilst also recognising the role of streets as places. This work is typically undertaken for clients such as Transport for London, Transport for Greater Manchester and local authorities in these and other metropolitan areas. Recent projects include:

  • Setting the Vision for Deansgate in Manchester – a key element of the City Centre Access Strategy
  • Working as part of an architectural team to develop external urban realm proposals as part of the Restoration & renewal of the Houses of Parliament
  • Developing Quality Bus Transit feasibility designs in Salford, Rochdale and Bury and producing the supporting business case.
  • Developing Liveable Neighbourhood feasibility designs and business case inputs for schemes in Hackney, Camden and Ealing

These projects require diverse skillsets that include active travel & bus priority design, traffic modelling (both local and strategic), business case development, stakeholder engagement and GIS analysis. Whilst you may not necessarily have had extensive hands-on experience in all of these fields, you will have sufficient understanding to be able to collaborate with the team to reach successful project outcomes. As such, it is likely that your background includes a balance of technical experience (for example in engineering and/or modelling) and a strong grasp of the societal, economic and political contexts that transport exists in, together with a successful track record of managing projects.
As a Principal Consultant /Associate you will take a project management role in project teams comprised of both junior and more senior experts. You will work closely with our market-leading Associates and Directors across our offices, who will actively support you in project delivery and in your wider career development.

In this role you will:

  • Manage transport planning studies, drawing on your project management skills, technical knowledge and analytical ability to effectively manage multi-disciplinary teams that comprise both internal colleagues and external subconsultants
  • Provide clients with the best advice by integrating work developed by team members (including technical inputs as traffic modelling outputs or design drawings) into high-quality project deliverables that contribute to the company’s reputation for delivering excellence
  • Lead optioneering of scheme alternatives through creation and application of appropriate assessment frameworks
  • Effectively liaise with clients and other external stakeholders
  • Prepare reports and deliver presentations that are appropriately tailored to varying audiences
  • Manage project budgets, exercising effective financial and budgetary control
  • Manage the preparation of competitive proposals for transport planning studies
  • Have a broad background that balances technical knowledge (which may be through hands-on experience in engineering and/or modelling) with a strong grasp of the societal, economic and political contexts that transport exists within (including regional policies such as Healthy Streets in London and Streets-for-All in Manchester)
  • Effectively deploy an appropriate mix of analytical tools and techniques for each project, drawing on your understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and available transport data sources
  • Apply your excellent written and verbal communication skills, including your ability to appropriately tailor a message to non-technical audiences (such as the public and politicians)
  • Take responsibility for multiple projects simultaneously, successfully managing competing deadlines

Depending on grade, in this role you will be required to:

  • Support our highway design advice offer across the company both in the UK and internationally.
  • Lead work streams within projects, ensuring that best practice techniques are applied consistently.
  • Deliver high quality highway and transportation advice as part of multi-disciplinary teams across a range of transport related projects including major developments, highway related regeneration projects and sustainable transport initiatives.
