Description:
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, together with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, is Europe’s leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology.
The Micro- and Nanostructuring group focuses on the processing of various materials, such as metals and glasses, with so-called ultrashort pulsed (USP) laser radiation, which has a pulse duration in the picosecond range. The “Transparent Materials” team is further developing the processing of high-precision components made of glass, sapphire, diamond and other transparent materials for important future fields such as the semiconductor industry, the display industry, medical technology, the optics industry and quantum technology.
USP laser processes are characterized by extremely high precision, but currently still have low productivity. One approach to scaling is the use of spatial beam shaping. A so-called Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) is used for this purpose, which can digitally change the beam shape. The further development of the algorithms for generating the beam shapes, the interaction of the modification areas during parallel processing with multi-beams and the selection of suitable beam shapes for scaling are the subject of current research and are being investigated by our team.
