POSITION SUMMARY:

The Student Attendance Coach promotes and enhances the overall academic mission of the district by working to improve the number of students regularly attending school. The attendance work should be part of the schools overall MTSS framework and is designed to operate at both a macro and micro level in the identified school.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Social Work or related field is required.

  • Two years working with children and/or adolescents to affect positive academic, social and/or emotional life-skills behaviors is required.
  • Additional years of the required experience which demonstrate the required knowledge and abilities may be considered in lieu of the Bachelor’s Degree on a year-for-year basis.

Any other combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the candidate is likely to possess the skill, knowledge, ability and trait characteristics essential for this classification may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Responsibilities:

  • Effectively run the Student Attendance Response Team meeting – key members of a SART are the building admin in charge of attendance, counselors, school psychologist, and key partners in the building like SUN, SEI, Step Up, and the Health Clinic.
  • Work with school administration, counselors, teachers and other staff to support students in order to: 1) increase the number of students who regularly attend school with a focus on historically underserved, emerging bilingual, and special education students.
  • Collaborate with instructional specialists and other school staff to implement a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in order to address root causes of chronic absenteeism, and to assist and advocate for students with social emotional and/or academic needs.
  • Manage the 10 Day Drop process by reviewing data for accuracy, ensuring that interventions have occurred prior to any drop (including 5 day and 10 day letters) and meet with reconnection services liaison regularly.
  • Serve on school-based committees like the 9th Grade Core Team to address educational issues, school engagement problems, safety issues, and program development for students
  • Collaborate with community partners offering on-site and community based services, including mentoring and tutoring supports, to ensure aligned supports for identified students using the MTSS framework.
  • Collaborate multi-agency services to support students and remove barriers to school attendance and refer students to appropriate social service supports provided by community, city, state and county organizations.
  • Provide ongoing consultation with mental health professionals including school psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and other licensed mental health providers.
  • Participate and lead trainings, in-services, workshops and meetings related to assigned activities.
  • Coordinate parent communication regarding resources and supports for improved attendance.
  • Conduct home visits to establish communication and positive connections between the parent/guardian and school setting around identified issues.
  • Serve as a liaison between families and the school to positively promote collaborative processes in educational planning for students by encouraging parent/guardian participation in schools.
  • Provide case management of students requiring additional supports in order to increase school attendance and implement best practices and culturally responsive interventions.
  • Provide leadership or specialized groups for identified chronically absent students
  • Provide personal, emotional, and academic support for identified students.
  • Create, maintain and distribute required records, reports, and other documentation.
