Description:

This student position is focused on developing organic and organometallic dendrimers and star-shaped molecules for various applications. The student research assistant will report to Assistant Professor Dr. Amani Abdelghani and is expected to contribute to group research, and meetings, and maintain a respectful community with other research team members. The primary work area will be the UPEI campus chemistry laboratory, utilizing various organic synthesis techniques. Safety training is required to take this position. This position is intended for undergraduate students who have completed their second year of post-secondary education. For additional details, please send an email to aabdelghani@upei.ca.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This position is open to candidates who are currently enrolled in a post-secondary program with priority given to UPEI students
  • You must have completed Organic Chemistry I and II (refer to the UPEI course calendar) or equivalent
  • Candidates must also have experience in a synthetic laboratory, which can be received through course laboratory experiences
  • Other experience in a research laboratory will be considered an asset
  • Applicants must have an understanding of chemical safety, including WHMIS, and are expected to learn additional safety requirements for the laboratory space
  • The candidate should have the ability to analyze IR and NMR data to assess complex purity and structure
  • Experience in using the instrument of common characterization methods such as NMR and IR will be considered an asset
  • Experience with UV-visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy is preferred

Responsibilities:

The student will be responsible for developing organic and organometallic macromolecules for fluorescence and biological applications. The specific responsibilities for this project include:

  • Ensuring the safety measures are followed within the lab
  • Performing organic synthetic techniques that involve multiple-step reaction mechanisms
  • Using standard techniques such as NMR, IR, UV-Vis, SEM, TEM, CV, and TGA for the characterization of the synthesized molecules
  • Participating in group meetings and research presentations
  • Contributing to the writing of a potential academic journal article
